Lateral Bone Condensing and Expansion for Placement of Endosseous Dental Implants: A New Technique

Abstract: Placement of endosseous dental implants can be a problem due to bone resorption if the patient has been missing teeth for a considerable period of time. In the literature, bone-grafting techniques have shown variable results. Additionally, bone grafting requires a longer treatment time and a need for a second surgery, and it adds significant cost to the treatment. These factors often discourage patients from having dental-implant treatment. Another technique for placement of dental implants in narrow bone ridg… Show more

“…Boyne et al have described the formation of bone in the implant's apical portion stabilized at the crestal level (7). The use of osteotomes has been developed in order to simplify implant placement in narrow osseous margins resulting from resorption (8,9). In 1994, Summers introduced a maxillary sinus lifting technique using osteotomes, in which bone is added to the apical part of the implant to improve stability; this technique can be employed whenever there is a 5-7mm residual margin.…”

“…By the virtue of this fact, the existing bone can be modified so the best size implant can be used, and the solidified bone provides increased initial stability which is very helpful for upcoming osteointegration. (3,4,5) There are better conditions for implementation of osteotome techniques when dealing with the upper jaw, rather than the lower one. The main requirements for using the technique are:…”

“…(2,5) The advantages of the osteotome techniques are the small number of surgical procedures, the possibility of direct installment of the dental implants, the improved quality of existing bone tissue, the high initial stability, and the low cost of the method. (7,8) The drawbacks of the technique are the serious reabsorption of alveolar ridge bone in case of poorly performed surgery, and occasional cases of post operative vertigo.…”
