Latent trait standardization of the benzodiazepine dependence self-report questionnaire using the Rasch scaling model

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to obtain standardized scores that correspond with the raw scores on the four Rasch scales of the Benzodiazepine Dependence-Self Report Questionnaire (Bendep-SRQ). The eligible normative group for standardization of the Bendep-SRQ scales consisted of 217 general practice (GP) patients, all using benzodiazepines. Two standardization methods were used and compared: "classical standardization," which transforms raw scores into standard scores on the unit normal distribution, and "… Show more

“…Application of IRT methods is emerging in the area of substance use research. For example, IRT has been used to form an interval-level measure of problem drinking (Cornel, Knibbe, van Zutphen, & Drop, 1994), to evaluate an index of drug use among adolescents (Kirisci, Tarter, & Hsu, 1994), to evaluate DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for benzodiazepine dependence (Kan, van der Ven, Breteler, & Zitman, 2001), to model processes of change among smokers seeking cessation treatment (Noel, 1999), and to assess tobacco beliefs among youth (Panter & Reeve, 2002).…”

“…For the Rasch and Reliability analyses, items were recoded to obtain positive correlations among items. Rasch analyses were done on the items belonging to a single factor [26]. As Rasch models are only readily available for dichotomous items, all items were dichotomised by assigning the first three response categories to 0, and the two upper categories to 1.…”
