Laser resection of a liver hydatid cyst under videolaparoscopy

Abstract: Total pericystectomy is the surgical method of choice for hepatic hydatid disease. This was performed under videolaparoscopy using the neodymium yttrium-aluminium-garnet (NdYAG) laser, allowing safe control of all vasculobiliary structures entering the pericyst. Case reportA 50-year-old north African man in good general condition was admitted in January 1991. He complained of pain in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, radiating to the right shoulder. He had neither jaundice nor fever. His eating habits i… Show more

“…The gradual trend toward bloodless surgery in traditional techniques of hepatic resection, 17,18 greater experience with laparoscopic surgery, and improvements in video equipment, laparoscopic instrumentation, and surgical skills have led hepatobiliary surgeons to attempt laparoscopic management of various hepatic lesions. 6,9,19 Management of biliary cysts offers good training for laparoscopic liver surgery. With increasing experience, minor hepatic resection of solid tumors can be safely performed.…”

“…We believe that processing new instruments for this purpose will help a lot [8, 10]. To minimize the spreading risk, pericystectomy can be used in selected locations of the cysts [11, 12]. …”

“…Since the development of laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) in the early 1990s, [1][2][3] this technique has rapidly expanded from partial LLR of the easily accessible anterolateral segments [segment 2 (S2), S3, S4b, S5, and S6] to left lateral sectionectomy (LLS), hemihepatectomy, other sectionectomies, segmentectomies and resections of S7, S8, and S1, and more complicated limited or modified anatomical LLRs. [4] LLR has recently become widely accepted as a less invasive treatment for liver tumors with specific advantages such as less intraoperative bleeding and a shorter postoperative length of hospital stay (LOS).…”
