Laser Direct Synthesis and Patterning of Silver Nano/Microstructures on a Polymer Substrate

Abstract: This study presents a novel approach for the rapid fabrication of conductive nano/microscale metal structures on flexible polymer substrate (polyimide). Silver film is simultaneously synthesized and patterned on the polyimide substrate using an advanced continuous wave (CW) laser direct writing technology and a transparent, particle-free reactive silver ion ink. The location and shape of the resulting silver patterns are written by a laser beam from a digitally controlled micromirror array device. The silver p… Show more

“…When ΔE is higher, the contrast of the pattern is higher. According to (2), the effects on the color difference of using a multilayered structure are shown in Figure 11, and the detailed data are listed in Table 4. The LDPE has the lowest ΔE value, while the PS has the highest ΔE value, which is consistent with the marking effect shown in Figures 9 and 10.…”

“…In recent years, as product requirements have increased, patterning on the surface of products has become increasingly important. This patterning includes trademark, cartoon image, origin, production date, address, and QR code patterns . There are presently many techniques for patterning products, such as screen printing, embossing, imprinting, and ink printing .…”

“…Despite these possible drawbacks, this ink possessed the best conductivity at 90 °C, which is almost equivalent to that of bulk silver. Similar ink has been tested by Liu et al 23 using laser direct patterning of silver film on polymer substrate. Chen et al 24 spin-coated Ag(dien)](tmhd)/hexylamine/ethyl cellulose based ink on PI substrate, and then annealed it at 250 ºC for three hours; they obtained a conductivity of 1-2.1×10 7 S/m depending on film thickness.…”

“…[5][6][7][8][9][10][11] Metal enhanced fluorescence (MEF) has been demonstrated as a valuable process for enhancing the fluorescence signal from dyes used as biomarkers, leading to increased sensitivity and often lower limits of detection (LOD) over conventional metal free fluorescence based assays. [22][23][24][25] In this work we demonstrate the possibility of translating this technology from the field of electronics to biological sensing, by adapting selfreducing silver inks as a simple, single step process for the deposition of plasmonic particle film for use in MEF applications and its incorporation into a sandwich fluorescence based assay. 17 Gold and silver are the main metals used for this application, however silver films are the main focus of this work due to its superior dielectric properties.…”
