Language influences on numerical development—Inversion effects on multi-digit number processing

Abstract: In early numerical development, children have to become familiar with the Arabic number system and its place-value structure. The present review summarizes and discusses evidence for language influences on the acquisition of the highly transparent structuring principles of digital-Arabic digits by means of its moderation through the transparency of the respective language's number word system. In particular, the so-called inversion property (i.e., 24 named as “four and twenty” instead of “twenty four”) was fou… Show more

“…In a related vein, it is important to highlight that medium of instruction has impact on students’ mathematics, performance (Klein et al 2013; Launio 2015). Since 1970s, the medium of instruction in the primary and secondary mathematics subject is English language in Singapore until present (Woo, public communication, August 28, 2015).…”

“…Although some of these irregularities also occur in Oceanic languages, English—like many other Indo‐European languages—is particularly afflicted by them. The same is true for inversion of constituents, which has also been shown to impede acquisition of the system and exert longitudinal influences on numerical performance (Klein et al., ). Whether this lack of transparency also affects cognitive processing among experts is less clear.…”

“…[99] in German), or irregular multiples of the base (as in French "quatre-vingt-dix" [= 4 × 20 + 10]). Several studies suggest that such irregularities contribute to delays in the acquisition of the verbal system and in the comprehension of the place-value notational system, and impede the learning of algorithms for addition and subtraction that are based on the place-value notational system and take advantage of the decimal structure (Fuson & Kwon, 1991;Klein et al, 2013;Miller, Smith, Zhu, & Zhang, 1995;Miura, Okamoto, Kim, Steere, & Fayol, 1993).…”
