Lactate dehydrogenase activity in the diagnosis of malignant effusions

Abstract: SYNOPSIS Enzyme assays in a series of 38 cases of pleural effusion and in 10 cases of ascites associated with malignant lesions and of 24 of pleural effusion and of five of ascites of benign origin do not support the suggestion that the estimation of the fluid lactate dehydrogenase serum ratios in pleural and peritoneal effusions is of value in the diagnosis of malignancy.

“…Tais achados corroboram os estudos realizados em humanos, que relatam que a atividade de lactato desidrogenase tende a se elevar em efusões transudativas (HORROCKS, et al, 1962;LIGTH, et al, 1972;JOSEPH et al, 2001;ROMERO-CANDEIRA et al, 2002).…”

“…5'-nucleotidase (5'- ND), was estimated by the method Sandra etal 12 and activity expressed as Mmoles/min/mg protein. The methods of Horrocks 13 was adopted for the assay Lactate dehydrogenise (LDH) and activity expressed as/imoles of pyruvate liberated/min/mg protein. The activity of Aspartate Transaminase in tissue sample was assayed by the method of King etal 14 and enzyme activity was expressed in jumoles of pyruvate liberated/min/mg protein.…”

“…Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine phosphokinase (CPK) were determined by the method of King[13] and Okinaka and his coworker,[14] respectively, using commercially available kit. Blood glucose was measured by the glucose-oxidase method.…”
