Labor productivity measurement in Japanese agriculture, 1956–1990

Abstract: This paper investigates the factors responsible for a drastic decline in the growth rate of labor productivity of the agricultural sector for the 1956–90 period. This investigation is carried out by a newly devised procedure which decomposes the growth rate of labor productivity into (1) the total substitution effect which consists of the effects due to factor price changes and biased technological change, and (2) the TFP effect composed of the effects due to scale economies and technological progress. Based o… Show more

“…In the rural economy, work organisation is not explicitly taken into account even though the industrial world recognises that production organisation (taylorism, toyotism) is an essential factor of competitiveness (Greenan, 1994). In economy, the term 'work' immediately refers to a production factor, a count of the workers or the worked times to take account of productive choices, labour allocation or evolution of labour productivity (Kuroda, 1995;Fafchamps and Quisumbing, 1998).…”

“…Based on previous studies (Kuroda 1989(Kuroda , 1995, economies of scale and R&D investments are strong candidates for causative factors that increase rice productivity. Also, urbanization is another candidate for a causative factor, if we consider the Von-Thunen's model that explains location of agricultural production areas with different yields.…”

“…Kuroda (1995) showed, in the case of the total cost function, that unlike the conventional growth accounting method, if both constant returns to scale and Hicks neutrality are not assumed a priori, changes in the growth rates of factor intensities can be decomposed into price effects, bias effects due to output scale and technological change, while changes in the growth rate of TFP can be decomposed into the effects due to scale economies and technological progress.…”

“…Kuroda (1995) applied this procedure in his study of labor productivity measurement in Japanese agriculture, 1956-90. The present study is going to decompose the growth rate of labor productivity into factor price effect, fixed input effect, scale effect and technological change effect.…”
