Qualification and assessment of work organisation in livestock farms

Abstract: Farmers have to cope with both society and market pressures in their working practices, as well as with the enlargement of farms, off-farm opportunities and profound changes in the workforce. Expectations in terms of working duration and rhythms are increasingly expressed by farmers, meaning that working conditions and the efficiency of work organisation are critical issues nowadays. The bibliography shows that work organisation is mainly discussed by social scientists, but that livestock scientists make a sig… Show more

“…As the available work force is often limited on farms, work organisation is of particular importance: what tasks need to be done, who can perform the task, is it possible to hire skilled workers, can work flows be adapted to react flexibly, e.g. to changing weather (for a review see Madelrieux and Dedieu, 2008).…”

“…The increase in farm sizes -and consequently herd sizes -at constant labour levels has made work organization a central concern for livestock farmers (Madelrieux and Dedieu, 2008). Most livestock farmers tend to address these work organization problems by simplifying farm management practices.…”

“…The basic scale unit of organization is the day, represented by the concept of a 'set-day'. A set-day represents a daily work organization framework corresponding to the technical and social division of work (Madelrieux and Dedieu, 2008). It is characterized by the routine work, the workforce performing the work and its duration, as well as the relations between routine work and seasonal work (Figure 1).…”

“…The QuaeWork method, built on livestock farming systems framework (Gibon et al, 1999), integrates conceptual developments from both the 'Bilan Travail' and Atelage approaches (Madelrieux and Dedieu, 2008). The 'Bilan Travail' method, proposed by livestock researchers, aims at integrating the work dimension into the analysis of how livestock farming systems operate at year-round level (Madelrieux and Dedieu, 2008). The goal was to quantify the work linked to herd and land management and to evaluate the time remaining for nonaccounted activities (agricultural or other).…”
