Abstract: The "Ecoles Centrales" were originally created by the Frena Convention in order to contribute to the education of the elite but the art classes were in fact assiduously attended by working class pupils.By confronting the various teaching methods used by art teachers in the "Ecoles Centrales" with those in use at the end of the "Ancien Régime", we shall study the appropriateness of their teaching methods compared with the aestheticand educational theories prevailing at the turn of the century.
