This work was designed to assess the concentration of six toxic metals in the soil and in unwashed and washed samples of different vegetable species (Petroselinum crispum, Brassica oleraceae var. acephala, Beta vulgaris var. cicla collected from six different sites (stream side, inner city, industrial, suburban, roadside, and rural) in Istanbul in 2007. Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were determined by using ICP-OES. It was found that the average highest values of metal accumulations were detected in unwashed samples. The correlation was significant between metal accumulations and the sites, where the vegetables were grown, in the industrial areas and along the roadsides. The highest and lowest average values in the vegetables varied between 0.24-0.89 μg/g dw for Cd, 3.73-14.04 μg/g dw for Cr, 1.47-5.19 μg/g dw for Cu, 3.13-13.65 μg/g dw for Ni, 29.28-87.00 μg/g dw for Pb, and 3.48-5.74 μg/g dw for Zn. The pattern of total metal contrations in the vegetables followed Pb>Cr>Ni>Zn>Cu>Cd.

This study was carried out to determine the effects of different heavy metals and its doses on germination and early seedling stage of maize (Zea mays L.) at the Akdeniz Univesity, Agricultural Faculty, Department of Field Crops in 2017. Heavy metals such as lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) and its doses such as 0 (control), 100, 200, 400 and 800 mg L -1 were used as experimental factors. This research was laid out on the factorial arrangements design in randomized parcels with 4 replications. Germination percentage (%), germination index, mean germination time (day), radicle length (mm), plumula length (mm), radicle fresh weight (mg plant -1 ), plumula fresh weight (mg plant -1 ), radicle dry weight (mg plant -1 ) and plumula dry weight (mg plant -1 ) properties were investigated in germination and early seedling stage of maize. As results of this study, Toxicity effects of heavy metals used in this research were listed as mercury> cadmium> lead> chromium> nickel. Also, in 400 and 800 mg L -1 doses of mercury and cadmium heavy metals were found to be more toxic than the same doses of others. 100 and 200 mg L -1 doses of heavy metals used in this work caused the stimulant effects on germination and early seedling stage of maize.

The research was conducted to determ ne the effect of g bberell c ac d pre-treatments on germ nat on of Ech nacea purpurea seeds under salt stress. In the study, three different gibberellic acid concentrations (0, 100, 200 and 300 ppm) were pre-treated. Seeds planted in petri dishes were left to germinate after salt applications at 0, 50 and 100 mM (NaCl) concentrations. Responses of echinacea to priming and salt stress treatments were observed on the bases of some growth and viability (radicle and hypocotyl length, radicle fresh and dry weight, hypocotyl fresh and dry weight, germination power, germination speed, mean germination time, germination and sensitivity index) parameters. According to the result of the research; when the salt concentrations increase, the germination and growth parameters of echinacea seeds were inhibited. It was conducted determined that increasing doses of gibberellic acid pre-treatments had significant and positive effects on the germination and growth parameters of echinacea seeds under salt stress conditions. In physiological enhancement of echinacea seeds, the best results were obtained from the 300 ppm GA +0 mM (control) 3 salt combination.
