Metal levels (cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, nickel, lead and zinc) of seventeen different edible wild fungi species (Agaricus campestris, Calocybe gambosa, Coprinus comatus, Hericium coralloides, Hydnum repandum, H. repandum var. rufescens, Lactarius deliciosus, L. salminocolor, Macrolepiota procera, Pleurotus ostreatus, P. ostreatus var. columbinus, Ramaria aurea, R. stricta, Rhizopogon luteolus, Sparassis crispa, Suillus bovinus, Tricholoma terreum) growing in Bolu-Turkey were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrocopy. The obtained data were analyzed with ''statistical package for the social sciences'' statistics program. In addition, relation between metal concentrations in both soil and fungi samples were investigated. The highest metal concentrations in Bolu District, Turkey were measured in A. campestris (cadmium 0.270, chromium 2.735 and zinc 7.683), C. comatus (iron 160.12), M. procera (copper 15.990, cobalt 0.352 and nickel 3.645), R. luteolus (Pb 4.756) mg/kg dw (dry weight). As a result of the measurements, it was observed that metal uptake is related with the species of fungi and is also affected by pH and organic contents of the soil.

A study to understand the biological effects of samples prepared with lead and the effects of lead were conducted on Lemna minor L. and Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleid. This study was intended to test the hypothesis that nutrient enrichment (P, NO3−–N and SO42−) enhances the metal tolerance of floating macrophytes. The plants were exposed to Pb concentrations 0, 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 mg l−1 for a period of 1, 3, 5, and 7 days. L. minor accumulated 561 mg g−1 dry weight (dw) Pb, and S. polyrhiza accumulated 330 mg g−1 dw Pb after 7 days, whereas in the groups enriched with nutrients, L. minor accumulated 128.7 mg g−1 Pb and S. polyrhiza accumulated 68.7 mg g−1 dw Pb after 7 days. Relative growth rates and photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, b, and carotenoid) were measured in L. minor and S. polyrhiza exposed to different Pb concentrations under laboratory conditions. Relative growth rates were negatively correlated with metal exposure, but nutrient addition was found to suppress this effect. Photosynthetic pigment levels were found negatively correlated with metal exposure, and nutrient addition attenuated chlorophyll decrease in response to metal exposure. Metal and nutrient concentration in water decreased throughout the experiments. The study concluded that nutrient enrichment increases the tolerance of L. minor and S. polyrhiza to metals, that L. minor and S. polyrhiza are suitable candidates for the phytoremediation of low-level lead pollution, and that L. minor was more effective in extracting lead than was S. polyrhiza.

In this study, copper, iron, manganese and nickel levels of branches and leaves of Pyracantha coccinea Roem. (firethorn) were measured for determining the heavy metal pollution in Mugla Province. Plant samples were collected from 34 different localities in four different areas of Mugla Province, during 2006 vegetation period. Unwashed and washed leaf samples and unwashed branch samples were subjected to analysis and copper, iron, manganese and nickel concentrations of samples were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The obtained data were analyzed with "statistical package for the social sciences" statistics program. As a result of measurements, the highest average and lowest values and their collected stations were as follows; the highest average (5.89 ± 0.04 µg/g dw) and the lowest (5.20 ± 0.03 µg/g dw) values of copper were measured near highways. The average highest iron value (9.53 ±1.68 µg/g dw) was in industrial area while the lowest was near highways (1.73 ± 0.54 µg/g dw). The highest value of magnesium accumulation (1.00 ± 0.16 µg/gdw) was measured near highways. The lowest value was determined in urban area (0.40 ± 0.14 µg/g dw). The average highest level of nickel was in industrial area while the lowest was determined in urban area. The values were 14.34 ± 1.59 µg/g and 4.05 ± 0.51 µg/g dw. As a result, it was proven that P. coccinea could be used as a biomonitor species for some of these heavy metals especially for copper and nickel.

The aim of this study is to determine the effects of Cd, Co and Cr on the growth of watercress (Nasturtium officinale) and to determine the bioaccumulation properties of these heavy metals by the plant. N. officinale individuals were exposed to different concentrations of Cd, Co and Cr for 72 h. Relative growth rates (RGR) and bioconcentration factor (BCF) ratios were calculated for each metal concentration. RGR values of plants exposed to Co slightly increased in lower concentrations, but then decreased again. In contrast, RGR values of plants exposed to Cd and Cr decreased linearly. Significant positive relationships were observed among the concentrations of Cd, Co and Cr in N. officinale and in the culture solution. BCF ratios were highest for plants exposed to Co, and lowest for plants exposed to Cr. The most efficient uptake of Cd, Co and Cr occurred at the external solution concentrations at 0.5, 0.5 and 10 mM, respectively.

In this study, we determined the heavy metal content (Cd(2+), Cr(3+), Cu(2+), Fe(3+), Ni(2+), Pb(2+), and Zn(2+)) in the soil surrounding the roots and different organs of Verbascum bombyciferum Boiss. (Scrophulariaceae), which is endemic to Uludağ Mountain, Bursa, Turkey. Plant samples were collected from roadsides, and heavy metal accumulation capabilities were tested. This is one of the pioneer species of ruderal plant communities on roadsides, building sites, rubbish dumps, etc. Different organs of plant samples (roots, stems, leaves, and flowers) and their soils were analyzed by inductively couple plasma optical emission spectroscopy for their heavy metal contents. Some of the analyzed heavy metals (Cd(2+), Cr(3+), Pb(2+), and Zn(2+)) were usually increased depending on the traffic in the sample sites, and this variation was also reflected in heavy metal content of plant samples. Our results show that this plant can be used as a bio-indicator species in the monitoring of increased Cd(2+), Cr(3+), Pb(2+), and Zn(2+) in the environment. We also concluded that V. bombyciferum have the capability of Cd(2+), Cr(3+), Cu(2+), Ni(2+), Pb(2+), and Zn(2+) accumulation.
