The starting point entails the declarations of the International Olympic Committee, as well as UNESCO and the Council of Europe on sport as a human right. This article adopts a philosophical and historical perspective on the question of which duties, obligations, and constraints stand in the way of realising this utopian perspective of fair and humane sport as a general human right. The work is based on central historical documents and writings. Two strands of argumentation are pursued. Firstly, the introduction of compulsory physical education, particularly in Germany and on the European continent, in the context of nation-building since the 19th century. Secondly, the idea of a world of sport of its own, which emerged from Olympism and was intended to assert itself against political and economic appropriations. Compulsory physical education is not a human right but a duty. The idea of a world of sports of its own has produced further regulations and obligations in certain fields of sports like professional and commercial sports. Doing sport for health and fitness may become a social obligation.

RESUMO: Entre meados do século XIX e fins da década de 1930 foram criadas no Brasil numerosas sociedades ginásticas cujo principal objetivo era, por meio de uma forma específica de educação do corpo, o Turnen, contribuir para a formação das comunidades teuto-brasileiras e para a manutenção de sua herança cultural em benefício do país que os acolhera. A partir das primeiras décadas do século XX, entretanto, o esporte passa a ganhar espaço entre essas sociedades e, como uma criação estrangeira, é envolvido por discussões e questionamentos acerca de seus possíveis benefícios educativos e higiênicos. Neste artigo, analisamos como ginástica e esporte foram apropriados pelas sociedades ginásticas como elementos de educação do corpo e manutenção identitária. Percebe-se que a resistência inicial à inserção do esporte está mais vinculada à preservação da ginástica como uma “herança” nacional alemã, e apresenta-se em diálogo com as discussões que se davam sobre o tema na Alemanha.

Resumo O artigo apresenta resultados de pesquisas sobre um ideário de vida ao ar livre no interior das sociedades ginásticas teuto-brasileiras nas regiões sul e sudeste do país, em que a natureza e seus elementos se mostraram como centrais em procedimentos educativos (escolares ou não), de saúde e de divertimento desse grupo imigrante, constantemente representado como “pioneiro” e “desbravador” da natureza brasileira. O objetivo é compreender as relações entre educação, cuidados do corpo e vida ao ar livre, presentes nas associações constituídas por este grupo entre o final do século XIX e a década de 1930, período em que se iniciaram as políticas de nacionalização do governo Vargas. As fontes utilizadas neste artigo são: periódicos; publicações festivas; estatutos; fotografias e recortes de jornais. Pretende-se, assim, contribuir para uma leitura do ideário de vida ao ar livre constituído por essas associações, consideradas pelos estudiosos da imigração como meramente “recreativas”.
