In this article, nitrification potential curves are introduced as a possible operational strategy to prevent nitrification in chloraminated distribution systems. Nitrification potential curves are constructed based on the parameters that define growth and inactivation kinetics of ammoniaoxidizing bacteria in environments that contain chloramine and ammonia. To demonstrate the applicability of nitrification potential curves, long‐term, pilot‐scale studies that covered a range of chlorine‐to‐ammonia application ratios and chloramine residual concentrations that are typical of full‐scale chloraminated systems were conducted. The nitrification potential curve approach was effective in explaining why some of the pilot‐scale runs experienced nitrification while others did not based only on experimental measurements of total chlorine residual and free ammonia concentration. Because of the simplicity of the required measurements, nitrification potential curves can help define strategies to monitor and operate chloraminated distribution systems to prevent or minimize nitrification episodes.

The effects of organic nutrients and cocultures on substrate removal by and competitive behavior of 1,2-dichloroethane-degrading bacteria were investigated. Xanthobacter autotrophicus GJ1O needed biotin for optimal growth on 1,2-dichloroethane. In continuous culture, dilution of biotin to a concentration below 0.2 nM resulted in washout. Growth could be restored by inoculation with the 2-chloroethanol utilizer Pseudomonas sp. strain GJ1, leading to a new steady state in which about 1% of the mixed culture consisted of cells of strain GJ1. This indicates that strain GJ1 excreted biotin or a precursor for its synthesis. Inoculation of the mixed culture with Ancylobacter aquaticus AD25 did not result in washout of strain GJ10, although strain AD25 has a 10-fold-lower K, for growth on 1,2-dichloroethane. Strain AD25 did not become dominant because of the lack of vitamins, which are necessary for its optimal growth. The results indicate that medium composition and the presence of other species strongly influence the effect of substrate limitation on the composition of a bacterial population that degrades a xenobiotic compound in a continuous culture.

A novel extractive membrane bioreactor (EMB) system, in which a silicone rubber membrane separates a contaminated gas stream from an aerated biomedium, extracted and biodegraded 1,2‐dichloroethane (DCE) from a gaseous waste stream. Selective transfer of the organic compound takes place through the silicone membrane to the biomedium, where biodegradation occurs. At a gas flow rate of 770 mL min−1 and an average DCE concentration of 0.65 mg L−1, the EMB, with 2.5 m2 of membrane surface contained in a spirally wound module, degraded 91% of the DCE. A biofilm grew on the membrane surface and caused a 600 mbar pressure drop at steady state conditions. The chloride ions released by DCE mineralization were 99% of the stoichiometric amount, while 60% of the total amount of carbon crossing the membrane as DCE was bioconverted to CO2. The overall mass transfer coefficient across the membrane in the absence of microbial activity was (0.8‐1.3) × 10−6 m s−1 and was controlled by the liquid film resistance. Extensive biofilm growth significantly lowered the DCE flux. Comparison of the EMB to a direct bioscrubbing process showed that the EMB system has superior volumetric efficiency.
