“…Although their nature is still unclear, the majority of authors consider these cells a form of true or aberrant keratinization, but the true nature of these cells has not been determined [30,31]. They are characteristically observed in calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors, in ameloblastoma, in ameloblastic fibroodontoma, and in odontoma [32,33]. In this case, the fluorescence may be ascribed to keratin presence, in agreement with a number of studies reporting high autofluorescence intensity of keratin [18,34].…”

“…Even in a peripheral ameloblastoma, small areas of ghost cells are evident (our unpublished case). Conceivably, they are neither unique to nor pathognomonic of OGCT (61). The second distinguishing feature is dentinoid induction, but dentinoid may be present in conventional ameloblastoma-dentinoameloblastoma as described within the later section in this treatise.…”

“…Thus, several authors consider OGCTs to be variants of ameloblastoma. They recommended the term keratinizing ameloblastoma (60,61), dentinogenic ghost-cell ameloblastoma (56), ameloblastoma ex COC (57) or ghost cell ameloblastoma (59).…”

“…In an immunohistochemical analysis, Piattelli and Trisi (35) demonstrated that ghost cells were negative for normal keratin. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy studies have shown that the pattern formed by large tonofilament bundles in ghost cells is unlike that normally found in orthokeratinized or parakeratinized epithelium, and since the production of keratin is not a natural function of odontogenic epithelium, the ultrastructural features of ghost cell keratinization should be interpreted as indicating the production of an aberrant or unusual form of keratin, and not true keratin (29)(30)(31). However, CCOTs, including adamantinomatous-type CP and PM, express hard α-keratin in ghost cells and shadow cells (28).…”

“…Other odontogenic tumors in which ghost cells appear as a secondary phenomenon include odontoma (29)(30)(31)(32)(33)(34)(35). With regard to the origin of ghost cells, it is thought that odontogenic epithelium undergoes metaplastic transformation with keratinization (32,33,35).…”
