Karyotype of Six Passiflora Species Collected in the State of Rio de Janeiro

Abstract: Summary It was described karyotypes of 6 species (2nϭ18) collected in Rio de Janeiro, P. alata, P. edmundoi, P. malacophylla, P. mucronata, P. galbana, P. quadrangularis. To do that young root tips were either obtained from seedling or adult plants. The arm ratio for each chromosome (r), total haploid chromatin length (THC), and asymmetry index (TF%) were calculated. Some differences as THC, TF%, position of the centromere, and number, type and position of satellites were observed among the species studied. Th… Show more

“…SOARES-SCOTT (1998) showed a karyotype with two SC, one in chromosome 4 and another in chromosome 7, both in the long arm. In later works, SOARES-SCOTT related the presence of at least three SC, but did not specify their position (cited by SOUZA et al 2003). CUCO et al (2003) observed the presence of SC in chromosomes 8 and 9.…”

“…OLIVEIRA (1996) found one SC in chromosome 8, while SOARES-SCOTT (1998) showed two SC, one in chromosome 4 and another in chromosome 7. The latter author later related the presence of at least three SC, as cited by SOUZA et al (2003). In contrast, CUCO et al (2003) observed the presence of SC in chromosomes 8 and 9.…”

“…The analysis indicated that the number and position of the satellites, secondary constrictions, number and length of chromosomes, and the position of the centromere were probably characteristics of the subgenera and sections (Beal, 1973a, b;Snow and MacDougal, 1993;Mayeda, 1997; Table 2). Some authors have observed intraspecific polymorphism, mainly in relation to the satellite number and the location (Oliveira and Coleman, 1996;Mayeda, 1997;Souza et al, 2003c). Mayeda (1997) suggested the presence of two larger pairs of the chromosomes (asymmetric karyotype) and two satellites as the characteristics of the Passiflora genus.…”

“…Mayeda (1997) suggested the presence of two larger pairs of the chromosomes (asymmetric karyotype) and two satellites as the characteristics of the Passiflora genus. However, some species have shown gradual size variation among the chromosomes and only one satellited chromosome pair (Melo et al, 2001;Souza et al, 2003c). According to Melo et al (2001), the Xerogona, Decaloba and Cieca sections of the Plectostemma subgenus presented very characteristic secondary constrictions (Table 3) and their number and position were the most important karyological features, mainly in the Decaloba section.…”
