Karyotype and seed protein analyses of Lycium(Solanaceae) in Iran

Abstract: Twelve populations of six Lvcium species were analysed for karyotypic characters and seed storage proteins using multivariate statistical methods. All reported chromosome numbers (mostly new) are 2n = 24 (x= 12). Karyotypes were symmetrical and placed in 1A and 2A classes of Stebbins' karyotype classification. Cluster analysis of karyological and protein data revealed variations among the populations of L. depressant and L. ruihenieum, and supports close relationships of L. kopetdaghi and L. depressum with L. … Show more

“…The available karyotypic data for 18 South American (BERNARDELLO et al 1995;STIEFKENS and BERNARDELLO 1996;2000;2002;, seven Asian (SHEIDAI et al 1999;DONGLI et al 2000), and fi ve southern African Lycium species (present study) suggest that speciation was not There is a common pattern of mostly m chromosomes in which a few cryptic chromosomal rearrangements may have occurred. Thus, karyotypic orthoselection seems to be in effect, preserving the more stable close complements (cf.…”

“…African Lycium species and previously examined members of tribe Lycieae share this tendency towards short chromosomes (BERNARDEL- LO et al 1995LO et al , 2008STIEFKENS and BERNARDELLO 1996, 2000, 2002SHEIDAI et al 1999;DONGLI et al 2000). Other taxa, like the large genus Solanum, include species with short (BER- NARDELLO and ANDERSON 1990;BERNARDELLO et al 1994;ACOSTA et al 2005; CHIARINI and BER-NARDELLO 2006) or longer chromosomes, from 3 to 14 μm (cf.…”

“…They have been examined eight South American species (BERNARDELLO et al 1995;BERNARDELLO 1996, 2000) and six Iranian species (SHEIDAI et al 1999). Thus, the goal of this work is to study the mitotic chromosomes of South American representatives of Lycium section Mesocope, with emphasis in qualitative and quantitative analyses of their karyotypes applying numerical techniques.…”
