Kaempferol Inhibits Angiogenesis and VEGF Expression Through Both HIF Dependent and Independent Pathways in Human Ovarian Cancer Cells

Abstract: Ovarian cancer is 1 of the most significant malignancies in the Western world, and the antiangiogenesis strategy has been postulated for prevention and treatment of ovarian cancers. Kaempferol is a natural flavonoid present in many fruits and vegetables. The antiangiogenesis potential of kaempferol and its underlying mechanisms were investigated in two ovarian cancer cell lines, OVCAR-3 and A2780/CP70. Kaempferol mildly inhibits cell viability but significantly reduces VEGF gene expression at mRNA and protein … Show more

“…Regardless, these results suggest that antilymphatics may be best given in conjunction with other compounds that prevent tumor growth. Previous work has shown that kaempferol consumption has been associated with reduced risk of developing many cancers (38)(39)(40) and has also been shown to reduce VEGF expression in human cancer cell lines (41,42). To our knowledge, this study is the first to report VEGFR inhibition and antilymphatic activity for kaempferol.…”

“…Some researchers report that kaempferol is a chemical that is used as an anti-angiogenesis in ovarian cancer therapy (Luo et al 2009). These chemical compounds contained in plant Cayratia trifolia L (Domin) as a test to prove the progression of a cancer cell.…”

“…The chemicals contained by Cayratia trifolia is stilbenes (such as: piceid, resveratrol, viniferin, and ampelopsin), kaempferol, quercetin (Kumar et al 2011). Some researchers report that kaempferol is a chemical that is used as an anti-angiogenesis in ovarian cancer therapy (Luo et al 2009). In malignant cancer in the gland structures are organized as colorectal epithelium.…”

“…15 Kaempferol is also effective in inhibiting angiogenesis and inducing apoptosis in ovarian cancer cells. [16][17][18][19] In human studies, a significant 40% decrease in incidence of ovarian cancer was found for individuals with the highest quintile of kaempferol intake as compared with those in the lowest quintile. 20 Despite promising preclinical results, the utility of such compounds for chemoprevention in humans has met with only limited success, largely due to inefficient systemic delivery and limited bioavailability of promising agents.…”

“…31 Chemoprevention of ovarian cancer using natural products has received more attention recently, and our earlier studies have indicated that kaempferol, a dietary flavonoid, is effective in inhibiting angiogenesis and inducing apoptosis in ovarian cancer cells. [16][17][18][19] However, effective concentrations are often above 20-40 µM, which are not always physiologically attainable. In this study, five nanoparticle formulations of kaempferol were developed and their efficacy in inhibiting the viability of malignant and normal ovarian cells was determined.…”
