Joint scheduling and resource allocation in uplink OFDM systems for broadband wireless access networks

Abstract: Abstract-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) with dynamic scheduling and resource allocation is widely considered to be a key component of 4G cellular networks. However, scheduling and resource allocation in an OFDM system is complicated, especially in the uplink due to two reasons: (1) the discrete nature of channel assignments, and (2) the heterogeneity of the users' channel conditions, individual resource constraints and application requirements. We approach this problem using a gradient-based… Show more

“…For example, joint scheduling and zero-forcing beamforming is studied in [41], and joint scheduling and opportunistic beamforming is studied [42], but both without power optimization, while [43], [44] consider beamforming with power allocation, but without scheduling. Finally, [45], [46], [47], [48], [49] consider joint scheduling and power control, but without beamforming,…”

“…Joint power control and scheduling has been investigated in the literature for both single-cell [10,11] and multicell systems [12][13][14][15]. The overall problem setup of this paper is closely related to that in [14,15], where power spectrum adaptation is jointly performed with proportionally fair scheduling.…”

“…The solution generated by the iterative algorithm satisfies the fairness constrains. Huang et al (2009) propose a gradient-based scheduling framework that changes the OFDM resource allocation into convex optimisation problem and solves it with Lagrange multiplier method. Unfortunately, the Lagrange method can not be used to solve the inequality constrained optimisation problem.…”

“…For the resource allocation model, the fairness of 4G mobile communication system has attracted many scholars' attention, such as Seo and Lee (2004), Mahmoud and Al-Rayyah (2010), and Huang et al (2009). A lot earlier research did not consider the fairness of the mobile communication system.…”
