Issuances of Automotive Vehicles and the Impacts on Air Quality in the Largest City in the Brazilian Amazon

Abstract: Manaus, a city of more than two million people, suffers problems arising from strong sunlight and aggravated by several factors, such as traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions generated by evaporation and burning of fuel. The present study examined Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) emissions in an urban area of the city using different methodologies. CO and NO2 were measured using automated and passive analyzers, respectively. Meanwhile, direct monitoring of these pollutants was performe… Show more

“…CO banyak dibebaskan oleh kenderaan bermotor terutama kenderaan persendirian yang menggunakan petrol berbanding pencemar yang lain. Di samping itu, Cartaxo et al (2018) pula menyatakan bahawa pelepasan gas CO yang dikeluarkan semasa proses pergerakan kenderaan adalah berbeza mengikut masa.…”

“…In Europe, road transport is responsible for as much as 75% of CO 2 emissions, 40% of HC emissions and 48% of NOx emissions to the atmosphere, while in the USA, despite the reduction in CO emissions, the transport sector is most responsible for the amount of emissions into the atmosphere: carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Research carried out in Brazil has shown that high traffic intensity caused by the very large number of cars driving on the streets of large cities is responsible for around 90% of CO emissions and from 80% to 90% of HC and NOx emissions [4].…”

“…Due to the fact that passenger cars emit the largest amount of greenhouse gases and are the source of increased noise intensity in cities, which has been proven in many studies, e.g., [2][3][4], reducing the number of private sector vehicles driving on the streets of large agglomerations could serve as an opportunity of reducing the harmfulness of road transport to the environment.…”

“…Emissions from road transport have been identified as the main source of ambient air pollution in Slovenian urban areas as well as worldwide, especially in European and North American cities [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Many documents emphasise that air pollution is a major health problem for the world population, as 55% of the world population lives in urban areas [7][8][9][10][11][12][13].…”
