Manaus, a city of more than two million people, suffers problems arising from strong sunlight and aggravated by several factors, such as traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions generated by evaporation and burning of fuel. The present study examined Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) emissions in an urban area of the city using different methodologies. CO and NO2 were measured using automated and passive analyzers, respectively. Meanwhile, direct monitoring of these pollutants was performed in vehicular sources in the vicinity of sampling locations. Results showed that levels of carbon monoxide vary over time, being higher during peak movement of vehicles. NO2 values have exceeded the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), and monitoring at source showed high levels of CO and NO2 emissions to the atmosphere.
Manaus, due to the growth process it has undergone in recent decades, is among the cities with a high level of environmental vulnerability. According to the IPCC 6th Climate Change Report, the impacts of climate change will hit hardest the poor populations with limited adaptive capacity. This article shows the IPCC's warnings about the risks of global warming, the great inequalities in the distribution of Amazonian populations, and the seriousness of the increase in deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions that compromise the lives not only of the region's inhabitants, but of the planet as a whole. Moreover, it emphasizes the need for urgent solutions in order to contain the degradation process of the Amazon rainforest, actions that include defending the Amazonian biome and the objective and efficient confrontation of the problems of pollutant emissions, through energy efficiency practices.
This work is a study of electricity supplied to residential customers in the city of Manaus-AM/Brazil. We selected three residential consumers with profiles of different loads, of which were collected data concerning the quality of the energy used in homes. The research made use of a tool, the analyser of power quality, KEW 6310. On the basis of procedures for electricity distribution by ANEEL, which provides for minimum requirements for energy (voltage and frequency) we compared the results of the evaluation in selected consumers, where, from the point of view of the network voltage and frequency, the minimum levels laid down by ANEEL are serviced. However, are observed significant levels of harmonic distortion of currents on consumers in study. Finally, it is shown the impact caused by these distortions in the elevation of consumption and the estimation of energy conservation in the residential sector.
