Isolation, Screening, and Characterization of Antibiotic-Degrading Bacteria for Penicillin V Potassium (PVK) from Soil on a Pig Farm

Abstract: (1) Background: Antibiotics are frequently used on farm animals, making animal husbandry a relatively large source of antibiotic pollution of the environment. The present study aims to isolate and acclimatize antibiotic-degrading bacterial strains for penicillin V potassium (PVK) from the contaminated soil of a pig farm. (2) Methods: Bacterial strains were isolated and acclimatized by continuous enrichment of cultures with PVK as the sole carbon source. The antibiotic susceptibility test, thiol mercury salt ul… Show more

“…In addition, whole bacterial cells can be used for ␤-lactam antibiotic degradation. The ␤-lactam-degrading bacteria most commonly reported in the literature are mainly Bacillus species, such as Bacillus cereus (11,24). To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first report of whole-cell biodegradation of PVK by an Ochrobactrum species.…”

“…However, with the widespread use of PVK, substantial concentrations of PVK have been found in livestock manure, soil, and wastewater effluents, which may pose potential threats to human health and contribute to the emergence of penicillinresistant bacterial strains. Therefore, it is imperative for researchers to identify ways to degrade PVK residues in the environment (11).…”

“…Isolating and screening AMX-degrading bacterial strains were performed in three steps, namely enrichment, acclimatization and separation. The details of the steps can be found in the previously published reference [17].…”

“…With respect to biodegradation mechanisms, most β-lactam antibiotic degradation studies have focused on the separation and characterization of key intermediate metabolites and not the whole pathway, including the mineralization products [21][22][23][24]. HPLC-mass spectrometry has typically been used as the primary detection method; however, such a tool cannot absolutely con rm the structure of degradation products or fully clarify the changes in the degradation processes [25].…”
