Isolation of new serotypes of bovine rotavirus

Abstract: Two cytopathogenic bovine rotavirus strains were isolated. The infectivity of both isolates was relatively stable at pH 3.0 and resistant to ether. Their replication was not affected by 5-iodo-2'-deoxyuridine. The new isolates shared immunofluorescent antigen with the Lincoln strain of bovine rotavirus. By neutralization test, however, these strains were clearly distinguished from one another.

“…Earlier works indicate the presence of at least two serotypes among group A bovine rotaviruses [2,3,9,15,21,26,32,35,36]. While the NCDV and UK strains have long been established as serotype 6 under the unified serotyping scheme, assignment of the bovine serotype 2 strains to a serotype under this scheme has just been taken into consideration.…”

“…Serologically they are quite complex: to cite only two mammalian species, five serotypes have been identified among rotaviruses from children (Hoshino et al, 1984;Matsuno et al, 1985), and at least two serotypes have been isolated from calves (Bridget & Brown, 1984;Briissow et al, 1987 a;Ihara et al, 1983;Murakami et al, 1983 ;Ojeh et al, 1984;Woode et al, 1983). Two bovine rotavirus genes coding for two different outer shell proteins cosegregated with virus neutralization specificities (Offit & Blavat, 1986).…”

“…Several serotypes have been identified among rotaviruses ti:om children (2,36), calves (5,16,27,30,33,35), foals (13), piglets (3), mice (12) and avian species (26). In calves about 90 per cent of rotavirus isolates belong to one serotype represented by bovine rotavirus (BI~V) UK (33,35).…”

Prototype 1 BRV UK has been well characterized (6,21,23,24,28,34), but detailed information about other serotypes of BRV is scarce (31).…”
