Camel colostrum collected within 24 h after parturition was analyzed for physicochemical and microbiological composition. The average contents of fats, dry matter, mineral matter and proteins were 1.71±0. 51, 199.55±16.93, 9.75±0.5 and 143.42±36.42 gL -1 , respectively. Microbiological analysis of colostrum samples showed richness in yeasts and Lactic acid bacteria and absence of coliforms. The good microbial quality of camel colostrum is due to a number of antimicrobial molecules such as immunoglobulins and lactoferrin. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated against the pathogens Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. At concentration of 20 g L -1 , colostrum caused an important inhibition of growth of all tested bacteria. It therefore seemed interesting to assess whether the compounds inhibit the growth of tested strains present in camel colostrum are resisting to the action of digestive enzymes. An in vitro hydrolysis by pepsin and pancreatin was then conducted. Hydrolyzed camel colostrum was still active against all pathogenic strains with inhibition rate ranging from 15.8% to 24.18%. This finding highlights the presence of antimicrobial fragments/peptides released during proteolytic hydrolysis that may contribute to the antimicrobial activity in camel colostrum and play a significant role in the host defence system.

RESUMO.-[Efeitos da infecção intramamária no proteinograma de ovinos durante a lactação.] Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar potenciais biomarcadores de infecção na glândula mamária de ovelhas Santa Inês. Foram monitorados rebanhos comerciais de ovinos, submetidos ao mesmo manejo higiênico-sanitário e nutricional, criados em sistemas de produção semi-intensivo durante as várias fases de lactação e avaliados aos 15, 30, 60 The study aimed to identify potential biomarkers of mammary gland infection in Santa Inês sheep. Commercial flocks of sheep provided the same hygiene, sanitary, and nutritional management under semi-intensive production systems were monitored during the lactation stage-and assessed 15, 30, 60, and 90 days after delivery (through the end of lactation and weaning). The California Mastitis Test (CMT) was performed on the mammary glands. Milk was collected for bacterial examination and protein analysis. Bacterial culture and biochemical characterization of the samples were performed. Forty-two milk samples from healthy glands (negative CMT and bacterial testing) and 43 milk samples from infected glands (positive CMT and bacterial testing) taken at the predefined time points were assessed. A rennin solution was used to obtain the whey. The proteins analysis was performed using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), which allowed for the quantification of nine whey proteins produced in healthy glands: serum albumin, lactoferrin, IgA, IgG heavy-chain (IgG HC), IgG light-chain (IgG LC), total IgG (IgG HC + IgG LC), α-lactalbumin, β-lactoglobulin, protein with MW 15.000 Da, protein with MW 29.000 Da and eleven whey proteins secreted by infected glands, including haptoglobin and α-1-acid glycoprotein. A comparison of whey proteins between healthy and infected glands showed increases (P<0.05) in the secreted and total contents of all proteins, except for IgG LC and α-lactoalbumin. The most significant changes were observed in α-1-acid glycoprotein, lactoferrin and haptoglobin, which showed three-, five-, and seven-fold increases in secretion, respectively. This study showed that haptoglobin, α-1-acid glycoprotein, lactoferrin, albumin, and the IgA and IgG immunoglobulins may serve as potential biomarkers for mammary gland infection in sheep. CMT). Abstract. The aim of the present study was to investigate the protective effects of camel milk on hepatic pathogenicity induced by experimental infection with Escherichia (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in Wistar rats. The rats were divided into six groups: The control and camel milk groups received water and camel milk, respectively; two groups received camel milk for 2 weeks prior to intraperitoneal injection of either E. coli or S. aureus; and two groups were injected intraperitoneally with E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. All animals were maintained under observation for 7 days prior to biochemical and gene expression analyses. The rats treated with camel milk alone exhibited no changes in expression levels of glutamic-pyruvate transaminase (GPT) or glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), compared with the water-treated group. The E. coli-and S. aureus-injected rats exhibited a significant increase in oxidative stress, and prior treatment with camel milk normalized the observed changes in the expression levels of GPT, GOT and malondialdehyde (MDA). Treatment with camel milk decreased the total bacterial count in liver tissue samples obtained from the rats injected with E. coli and S. aureus. Camel milk administration increased the expression levels of glutathione-S-transferase and superoxide dismutase, which were downregulated following E. coli and S. aureus injection. In addition, camel milk downregulated the increased expression of interleukin-6 and apoptosis-associated genes. Of note, administration of camel milk alone increased the expression levels of the B cell lymphoma 2-associated X protein and survivin anti-apoptotic genes, and supplementation prior to the injection of E. coli and S. aureus induced further upregulation, In conclusion, camel milk exerted protective effects against E. coli and S. aureus pathogenicity, by modulating the extent of lipid peroxidation, together with the antioxidant defense system, immune cytokines, apoptosis and the expression of anti-apoptotic genes in the liver of Wistar rats.
