“…This association has led meat inspectors and slaughterhouse workers to assume that WSK could be indicators of past or current leptospiral infection, and kidneys were condemned as a consequence (Uzal et al 2002). Leptospires have been isolated from kidneys of clinically healthy slaughtered sheep in New Zealand (Blackmore et al 1982), Australia (Gordon 1980) and Brazil (de Azevedo et al 2004), and clinically healthy slaughtered cattle (Prescott et al 1987;Uzal et al 2002) and pigs (Peet et al 1983;Baker et al 1989;Campagnolo et al 2000). Thus, infected animals pose an occupational health risk of leptospirosis to meat workers.…”

“…Serovar hardjo has been isolated from naturally infected sheep in New Zealand (Bahaman ef all980). Victoria (Gordon 1980) and Northern Ireland (Ellis et a / 1983), and from experimentally infected sheep in New Zealand Hathaway and Marshall 1979 The organism, although isolated from renal tissue, has not previously been histologically demonstrated in the kidney. This brief report details the demonstration of leptospires in kidney sections of a sheep by silver staining.…”

“…Gordon (32) and Hathaway (33) concluded that, despite presenting certain resistance to the disease status, sheep were infected by Leptospira spp. through contaminated water and pasture, especially by the serovar Hardjo, and once the infection was established the animals acted as hosts, carriers and releasers of the bacterium in the urine for more than two months.…”
