Isolation and partial characterization of collagen from outer skin of Sepia pharaonis (Ehrenberg, 1831) from Puducherry coast

Abstract: Type I collagen from outer skin of Sepia pharaonis was extracted and partially characterized. Yield of Acid Soluble Collagen (ASC) and Pepsin Soluble Collagen (PSC) were calculated as 1.66% and 3.93% and the total protein content of ASC and PSC were found as 18.4% and 48.6%. FT-IR spectrum of ASC and PSC recorded 12 and 14 peaks, respectively. 1H NMR spectrum of ASC showed singlets at 1.23 ppm, 3.1 ppm, 3.55 ppm and 3.7 ppm and PSC at 1.23 ppm and 2.08 ppm. The molecular weight for ASC was calculated as 102 kD… Show more

“…The protein content of ASG, WSG and PSG had no significantly different by ANOVA analysis. The protein content was higher than other literature reported 18.4 and 48.6% (Krishnamoorthi et al, 2017). And some literature use the gelatin/collagen extracted by these methods as pure collagen/gelatin (Iswariya et al, 2017).…”

“…FT-IR analysis revealed the presence of C-O, C-H, and O-H stretching of the -CH (CH 3 )-OH end group of PLA [34]. The absorption peaks assigned to C=O stretch (1041-1180 m −1 ) and -CH 2 asymmetrical stretch (2853-2923 cm −1 ) demonstrated the existence of collagen into bionanocomposites [34]. The addition of silver nanoparticles into PLA bionanocomposites up to 1 wt.% led to increase in the intensity of main absorption bands for PLA/AgNPs 0.5 and PLA/AgNPs 1 bionanocomposites.…”

“…The shells of crustaceans are considered as waste material by the food processing companies and approximately 60,000-80,000 tons of shell fish wastes are disposed by these industries (Tarafdar and Biswas, 2013). The skin of cuttle fish is treated as waste at homes, fish shops and fish processing factories (Krishnamoorthy et al, 2017). Hence, they also prove to be economically viable.…”
