In the present study, we sequenced and analyzed the complete genomes of the goose parvovirus (GPV) and the duck parvovirus (MDPV) isolates derived from a co-infected dead Muscovy duckling without any symptoms of other emerging Muscovy duck diseases. The genomic organization and sequences analysis indicates that the size of the full-length inverted terminal repeats regions determines the genomic length of GPV and MDPV, with which the lengths of the non-structural protein and capsid proteins coding region were highly conserved. According to the phylogenetic analysis, there are two genotypes of duck parvoviruses co-circulating in Muscovy ducks in China INTRODUTIONAnseriform dependoparvovirus 1 belonging to the family Parvoviridae that classified into two subfamilies (Densovirinae and Parvovirinae), which are further classified in thirteen generas (5 within Densovirinae and 8 within Parvovirinae). Anseriform dependoparvovirus 1 now have two groups that include goose parvovirus (GPV) and the duck parvovirus (MDPV). The MDPV is closely related to the GPV based on the southern hybridization assays and shared more than 80.0% sequence identity with GPV. GPV can cause highly contagious and fatal disease in goslings and Muscovy ducklings; whereas MDPV only cause disease with Muscovy ducklings [1,2] . The MDPV and GPV contain single-stranded DNA genome of approximately 5.1-kb in length, sharing closely related in genome and neutralization. The genome contains two major open reading frames (ORFs). The left ORF1 encodes the non-structural protein (NS) involved in viral replication, and the right ORF2 encodes the viral capsid proteins VP1, VP2 and VP3. The VP2 and VP3 shared the same C-terminal of the VP1, which were produced by alternate splicing [3,4] . The MDPV and GPV were reported once epidemic in many Muscovy duck breeding regions, such as Hungary, China, Japan, Thailand, France, and the USA. Identification of Goose-Origin Parvovirus as a Cause of Newly Emerging Beak Atrophy and Dwarfism Syndrome in Ducklings

A recent epizootic outbreak, in China, of duck beak atrophy and dwarfism syndrome (BADS) was investigated using electron microscopic, genetic, and virological studies, which identified a parvovirus with a greater similarity to goose parvovirus (GPV) (97% protein homology) than to Muscovy duck parvovirus (MDPV) (90% protein homology). The new virus, provisionally designated GPV-QH15, was found to be antigenically more closely related to GPV than to MDPV in a virus neutralization assay. These findings were further supported by phylogenetic analysis showing that GPV-QH15 evolved from goose lineage parvoviruses, rather than from Muscovy duck-or other duck species-related parvoviruses. In all, two genetic lineages (GPV I and GPV II) were identified from the GPV samples analyzed, and GPV-QH15 was found to be closely clustered with two known gooseorigin parvoviruses (GPVa2006 and GPV1995), together forming a distinctive GPV IIa sublineage. Finally, structural modeling revealed that GPV-QH15 and the closely related viruses GPVa2006 and GPV1995 possessed identical clusters of receptor-interacting amino acid residues in the VP2 protein, a major determinant of viral receptor binding and host specificity. Significantly, these three viruses differed from MDPVs and other GPVs at these positions. Taken together, these results suggest that GPV-QH15 represents a new variant of goose-origin parvovirus that currently circulates in ducklings and causes BADS, a syndrome reported previously in Europe. This new finding highlights the need for future surveillance of GPV-QH15 in poultry in order to gain a better understanding of both the evolution and the biology of this emerging parvovirus. The Parvoviridae are a family of small DNA viruses that consists of two subfamilies, Parvovirinae and Densovirinae. Parvoviruses are members of the subfamily Parvovirinae and can infect and cause diseases in humans as well as in other mammals, waterfowl, and poultry (1). In waterfowl, two genetically related parvovirus subgroups, goose parvovirus (GPV) and Muscovy duck parvovirus (MDPV), have been identified (2). GPV primarily infects geese and Muscovy ducks and can be highly contagious, with 70% to 100% mortality in goslings under the age of 4 weeks (3, 4). Interestingly, MDPV differs from GPV in that it infects, and causes disease in, Muscovy ducks and several hybrid duck breeds only, not geese. Both GPV and MDPV have been assigned phylogenetically to the genus Dependovirus in the family Parvoviridae due to similar genetic properties and evolutionary origins. Muscovy duck parvovirus (MDPV) is threatening industry and backyard Muscovy duck poultry throughout the world. Here, we confirmed its presence in Indonesia for the first time. The outbreak described in this study occurred in a small fatty liver (French: foie gras) industry in Tabanan, Bali, and affected ducklings aged 2-3 weeks. Although older Muscovy ducks were present at the facility, they did not present signs of illness. Among the ducklings, the morbidity and mortality rates were 100% and 90%, respectively. The initial incidence began on 15 June 2014 and ended a month later. It reoccurred in January 2015. Clinical signs were lethargy, anorexia, watery diarrhoea, and dyspnea. The most frequent pathological lesions were cardiac enlargement with pale pericardia, haemorrhage, and enlargement of the liver. Dominant histopathology features were severe enteritis, epicarditis, and hepatitis. Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and published primer pairs NS1/REP and VP1, MDPV infection was confirmed with whole DNA isolated from the heart and liver homogenates. Sequencing of the PCR products resulted in 900 bp NS1/REP and 1200 bp VP1 fragments specific to MDPV. The virus sequences from the two separated incidences were completely homologous with one another. Now that MDPV has been detected in Indonesia, it should be included in the differential diagnosis when evaluating ducklings with MDPV-associated symptoms.
