Isolation and Maximisation of Extraction of Mangiferin from the Root of Salacia chinensis L.

Abstract: Mangiferin has been reported to exhibit anti-viral, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, immunomodulatory and hepatoprotective properties. This study aimed to develop an HPLC method to isolate mangiferin from Salacia chinensis L. root; investigate the impact of solvents on yield; optimise the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) technique; and compare mangiferin yield with continuously shaking extraction (CSE) and decoction techniques. The results showed that mangiferin, with a purity of over 88%, could be achieved by … Show more

“…The study revealed the highest extractable solids (15.6%) with absolute methanol followed by 50% ethanol, 50% methanol, and 50% acetone (14.3%, 12.3%, and 12.2%, resp.). Aqua solvent extracted half of extractable solids in comparison with absolute methanol, whereas 100% ethanol and 100% acetone only extracted 25% of extractable solids extracted by 100% methanol [ 25 ]. The result showed that recovery yields of crude semisolid extract prepared from S. chinensis root was significantly affected by the extraction solvents.…”

“…Various parts of mango plant ( Mangifera indica ) are rich source of MF ( Iseda, 1957a , Iseda, 1957b , Ajila et al, 2010 ). Mangiferin attracted the interest of many researchers due to its antioxidant nature ( Ngo et al 2019 ). An isomer, IsoMF (4-C-β-D-glucopyranosyl-1, 3, 6, 7 - tetrahydroxy xanthone), is not very common and it has been isolated from the aerial parts of Anemarrhena asphodeloides ( Aritomi and Kawasaki, 1970 ) and Dryopteris ramosa ( Ishaque et al 2021 ).…”
