Aim: The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize the culturable endophytic bacteria from the roots and leaves of three different mangrove plants found growing in same environment. Study Design: This study employs experimental design, statistical analysis of the data and interpretation. Place of Study: The roots and leaves of three mangrove plants; Rhizophora mangle, Avicennia germinans and Acrostichum aureum were gotten from a waterfront location in old Port Harcourt township of Rivers State, situated at Longitude 40 45’5.18’’N and Latitude 70 0’58.35” E. Methodology: Using standard Microbiological techniques, the roots and leaves were treated and endophytic bacteria isolated and subjected to morphological and biochemical tests. Results: From the roots, the hydrocarbon utilizing bacteria counts ranged from 7.0x103cfu/g – 1.6x104cfu/g, while the that of the leaves ranged from 3.0 x105cfu/g – 8.0 x105cfu/g. The nitrogen fixing bacteria counts for roots ranged from 4.5 x103cfu/g – 1.0 x104cfu/g and that of the leaves ranged from 3.0 x105cfu/g – 6.0 x105cfu/g. Nitrifying bacteria counts for the roots ranged from 5.0x103cfu/g – 7.0x103cfu/g, while the counts from the leaves ranged from 3.5 x 105cfu/g - 5.0 x105cfu/g. Out of the 24 isolates, 14 were from the roots, while 10 were from the leaves. Percentage of occurrence of the isolates was in this order Bacillus sp 33% > Staphylococcus sp 21%> Klebsiella sp 13%> Pseudomonas sp 9%> Micrococcus sp 8%> Nitrobacter sp 8%> Nitrosomonas sp 4%> Azotobacter sp 4%. This reveals that Bacillus sp occurred most in the plant samples. The result also revealed that the Red Mangrove Roots had the highest number of organisms. The endophytic bacteria isolated were further subjected to morphological and biochemical identification and they were identified as: Pseudomonas sp, Bacillus sp, Staphylococcus sp, Micrococcus sp, Klebsiella sp, Azotobacter sp, Nitrobacter sp. and Nitrosomonas sp. Five of the isolates showed a high potential to degrade crude oil in the following order Pseudomonas sp (H2) > Bacillus sp (BA) > Klebsiella sp (SB)> Bacillus sp (TG) > Pseudomonas sp (H1). Conclusion: From the results, the mangrove roots and leaves contained high numbers of active indigenous bacteria most of which are known to use up crude oil as their carbon source. The mangrove roots had higher number of endopyhtic bacteria than the leaves.

Plant damage by pathogenic fungi is often found in plants, one of which is caused by Sclerotium rolfsii. Biological control strategy offers a promising alternative for managing disease in plants because they are environmental friendly compared to pesticides application. One of the biological control offered is by using endophytic fungi isolated from Vitex trivolia L. The aim of the study was to isolate, to identify macroscopic and microscopic endophytic fungi from Vitex trifolia L and to test their antagonism potency against the pathogenic fungus Sclerotium rolfsii in vitro. The isolation obtained 7 endophytic fungi isolates identified based on their genus characteristics, nsmely Periconia sp, Aspergillussp, Dendrophoma sp, Geotrichum sp, Ampulliferina sp, Chalara sp, dan Bispora sp and 2 isolates have not been identified. The Antibacterial test of the fungi isolate on the 4 tested bacteria showed that of all the fungi isolate have low activity. The antagonism test using the direct opposition method with the PIRG formula, showed that the 3 isolates had high percentage of growth inhibition, in which ALJ1, BLJ5, and ALJ3 isolate has 85%, 90%, and 100% respectively. This potency could be used as biological agents on the pathogenic fungus Sclerotium rolfsii.

In the hadith, Rasulullah SAW prohibit human to consume meat and milk from manure-eating animal (Jallalah animal). In this study, tilapia fishes were fed chicken manure (being Jallalah). Then, it was analyzed based on the microbe in their intestine. The purposes of this study are to isolate and to identify the types of bacteria, and to determine the pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria in the intestines of fish that have been fed chicken manure. Bacteria samples were isolated from the intestine of fish with chicken manure and the commercial fish food as a control. Bacteria identification was done by using morphological characterization, macroscopic and microscopic identification, and biochemical test. The results show that 21 isolated bacteria in the fish intestine that was fed chicken manure and six of the bacteria are pathogenic. Based on this study, it can be concluded that tilapia fish by feeding with chicken manure contains many types of pathogens bacteria. Briefly, tilapia fish is not good for being consumption.Abstrak: Dalam hadis yang diriwayatkan oleh Ibnu Umar, Rasulullah SAW. Melarang memakan daging dan meminum susu hewan pemakan kotoran (hewan Jallalah). Pada penelitian ini, ikan nila diberi pakan kotoran ayam (menjadi Jallalah). Selanjutnya ikan tersebut dianalisis kandungan mikroba yang terkandung didalam saluran pencernaannya. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengisolasi dan mengidentifikasi bentuk bakteri dan mendeterminasi bakteri patogen dan non-patogen yang terdapat didalam saluran pencernaan ikan ynag telah diberi pakan kotoran ayam. Sampel bakteri diisolasi dari saluran pencernaan ikan setelah diberi kotoran ayam dan ikan yang diberi pakan komersil (kontrol). Identifikasi bakteri dilakukan secara makroskopik, mikroskopik, dan uji biokimia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ditemukan 21 isolat bakteri dalam usus ikan yang diberi korotan ayam yang tergolong ke dalam genus Listeria, Staphylococcus, Alcaligenes, Cromobacterium, Edwardisiella, Micrococcus, Bacillus, dan Kurthia. Dari 21 jenis tersebut terdapat 6 jenis bakteri pathogen yaitu Edwarsiella sp, Micrococcus sp, Staphylococcus sp, Alcaligenes sp, Listeria sp dan Chromobacterium. Kesimpulan pada penelitian ini bahwa hewan ikan yang memakan kotoran ayam mengandung banyak jenis bakteri patogen sehingga tidak baik untuk di konsumsi.
