Isolation and Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles of Enterobacteria from Nestling Grey-Breasted Parakeets (Pyrrhura Griseipectus)

Abstract: The psittacine Pyrrhura griseipectus is a threatened species currently only found in Ceará State, Brazil. A microbiological survey was conducted to determine the composition of the enteric microbiota of this species, as well as the phenotypic profiles of antimicrobial susceptibility presented by the isolates. Cloacal swabs were collected from individual birds and submitted to microbiological processing. Antimicrobial susceptibility profiles were evaluated using the disk diffusion method. Bacteria of the genus … Show more

“…In the studies carried out by Machado et al (2018) and Teixeira (2019), there was high sensitivity to ceftiofur in the antimicrobial sensitivity test, results similar to those found in this research. However, other studies demonstrate a high rate of resistance to ceftiofur, Matias et al (2016) had 71.67% resistance to the antimicrobial mentioned above.…”

“…Concerning Escherichia coli, it is possible to observe that the results in relation to multidrug resistance are the most varied. However, it is possible to find similar rates [15], percentages lower than 5.4% or higher than 23.1% [26,84].…”

“…Environmental pollution is one of the anthropogenic actions that puts the conservation of avifauna at risk, mainly on aspects related to the dissemination of pathogens that are important for animal and public health, such as Salmonella and other enteropathogens [11,12]. Furthermore, free-ranging birds may come into contact with residues of antibiotics or resistant microorganisms when exposed to contaminants in the environment in which they live [13,14,15]. This may affect the health of birds, considering that factors such as ingestion of antibiotics and infection by pathogenic organisms may alter the microbiota of birds [16,17,18].…”

“…Neste caso, o pavão era criado em um sistema extensivo, no qual pode ter entrado facilmente em contato com a bactéria. O isolamento desta mesma bactéria a partir de swab cloacal foi descrito na região nordeste do Brasil por Machado et al [20] na caracterização da microbiota entérica do psitacídeo Pyrrhura griseipectus.…”
