IslandFAST: A Semi-numerical Tool for Simulating the Late Epoch of Reionization

Abstract: We present the algorithm and main results of our semi-numerical simulation, islandFAST, which is developed from the 21cmFAST (Mesinger et al. 2011) and designed for the late stage of reionization. The islandFAST predicts the evolution and size distribution of the large scale under-dense neutral regions (neutral islands), and we find that the late Epoch of Reionization (EoR) proceeds very fast, showing a characteristic scale of the neutral islands at each redshift. Using islandFAST, we compare the impact of two… Show more

“…The late neutral islands are instead dominated by the larger structures. The size distribution of neutral islands evolves slowly, but, in contrast to what was found by Xu et al (2017), does evolve to smaller sizes as reionization progresses.…”

“…Planck Collaboration et al 2020;Becker et al 2015;Qin et al 2021a;Becker et al 2021;Bosman et al 2021), with potential neutral islands lasting up to below redshift 6 (Kulkarni et al 2019;Keating et al xuyd@nao.cas.cn (YX), zhangxin@mail.neu.edu.cn (XZ), xuelei@cosmology.bao.ac.cn (XC) 2020). Increasing attention has been driven to the late EoR, investigating the statistics of the large-scale neutral regions (islands) (Giri et al 2019;Nasir & D'Aloisio 2020), how the islands evolves (Xu et al 2014(Xu et al , 2017, and a statistical tool has been proposed to determine the completing redshift of reionization by measuring the 21-cm bias (Xu et al 2019).…”

“…These played a significant role in regulating the ionizing background and the reionization process (e.g. Miralda-Escudé et al 2000;Alvarez & Abel 2012;Xu et al 2017). Therefore, it is essential to properly model the effects of SSAs when predicting and interpreting the upcoming 21-cm data, especially for the signal from the late EoR (e.g.…”

“…There are several key differences between their work and ours. For these late stages of reionization, they use the code FAST (Xu et al 2017) and their MFP parameter is not constant but has a redshift dependence according to the fit from Songaila & Cowie (2010). Furthermore, they included a contribution from H in galaxies in their bias parameter.…”
