The objective of this study was to compare the electrophoretic pattern of serum proteins in newborn calves, lambs, goat kids and piglets in precolostral blood samples. Blood samples were collected within 30 min of birth, prior to ingestion of first colostrum, and the concentrations of total proteins and protein fractions were analyzed using electrophoresis on agarose gel. The size and shape of the protein fractions on the electrophoretograms differed among the investigated animal species. Significant differences were found in the total protein values and all the separated protein fractions, as well as albumin to globulin ratio (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001). The mean total protein concentration in piglets was lower compared to ruminants. Albumin concentrations were markedly higher, and the concentrations of α1-globulins were lower, in neonatal ruminants compared to piglets. The values of α2-globulins were higher in lambs and goat kids, and lower in calves and piglets. An opposite tendency was found in the values of β-globulins: a detectable amount of γ-globulins was recorded in all evaluated animal species. Presented results suggest marked species related differences in the shape and size of protein fraction among neonates of farm animal species, and the importance of the evaluation of electrophoretograms with regard to these findings.

Cystic echinococcosis is a prevalent helminth-zoonosis that poses a significant threat to human and animal health worldwide. Although it typically shows an asymptomatic clinical course, it has been reported to cause many damages and biochemical changes in tissues and organism. The aim of this study was to investigate the concentrations of nitric oxide (NO), reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), ceruloplasmin (Cp), and total sialic acid (TSA) in sheep liver tissue affected by cystic echinococcosis. The study was carried out on sheep between 4-5 years of age brought to the slaughterhouse in the Igdir territory. The livers were examined post-mortem for cystic echinococcosis and cystic structures. Sheep liver tissues that tested positive for protoscolex were designated as the ‘infected group’, while healthy sheep liver tissues without lesions were assigned to the ‘control group’. The results showed significantly higher levels of NO, MDA, Cp and TSA in the infected group compared to the control group (p<0.05), while GSH levels were significantly lower (p<0.05). These findings indicate that cystic echinococcosis in sheep is closely associated with mechanisms of inflammation, oxidative stress, and tissue damage. Moreover, our study provides insights into the oxidative response of cystic echinococcosis in liver tissue and enhances our understanding of the disease’s pathogenesis.

Acute phase proteins are proteins synthesized by the liver in response to the acute phase response. While these proteins are insignificant in healthy animals, their concentrations increase rapidly during infection, inflammation, or tissue damage and are used as an indicator of inflammation. Since the blood concentrations and importance levels of these clinically important proteins differ according to the animal species, they are evaluated separately for each animal species. Most of the acute phase proteins have been studied in detail in the field of human medicine and are routinely used in the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases. In the field of veterinary medicine, it has not been used sufficiently. In this book chapter, we will provide up-to-date information about acute phase proteins that are important for cattle, as well as explain that acute phase proteins can be used in the early diagnosis of diseases, in the differentiation of viral and bacterial infections, in guiding the treatment of sick animals and in determining their prognosis.
