Is Seeing Still Believing? Leveraging Deepfake Technology for Livestock Farming

Abstract: Deepfake technologies are known for the creation of forged celebrity pornography, face and voice swaps, and other fake media content. Despite the negative connotations the technology bears, the underlying machine learning algorithms have a huge potential that could be applied to not just digital media, but also to medicine, biology, affective science, and agriculture, just to name a few. Due to the ability to generate big datasets based on real data distributions, deepfake could also be used to positively impa… Show more

“…Some of the applications are: 1) Deepfake technology is a sort of artificial intelligence (AI) used to make convincing synthetic pictures, audio, and video duplicates of existing material. Figure 35 by Neethirajan [145] illustrates how data augmentation, in the form of digital twins, digital avatars, or metaverse, is a modern tool for examining the intricacies of animal cognition and behavior to improve farm animal welfare. Deepfake technology can significantly enhance animal health, sociality, emotionality, and animal-human and animal-computer interactions, increasing the agricultural industry's productivity and sustainability.…”

However, authoring tools currently present in the market have several limitations, such as failure of object recognition system next to boundary edges, inducing cybersickness in certain events of a simula-FIGURE 35: Leveraging deepfake technology for livestock farming [145].…”

“…To illustrate, suppose that a calf is suffering emotionally owing to the absence of a mother that has been sent for slaughter. The technologies in question can be harnessed to create a digital simulation of the mother cow that may provide comfort to the calf and enhance its emotional well-being (Neethirajan, 2021).…”

“…Other scholars defined the metaverse as a 3D virtual environment where users can interact with each other and objects in real-time using avatars (Duan et al, 2021; J. Kim, 2021; Ng et al, 2021). Despite numerous definitions of metaverse (Al-Ghaili et al, 2022), none have yet addressed metaverse in the workplace.…”
