Is platelet-rich fibrin really useful in oral and maxillofacial surgery? Lights and shadows of this new technique

Abstract: Conclusion The platelet-rich plasmas failed to demonstrate significant benefits that justify the daily use, and the use of platelet-rich fibrin is limited to some very specific applications in which satisfactory results were achieved. Only a new simple, inexpensive and efficient technique such as the leucocyte-and platelet-rich fibrin will continue to develop in oral and maxillofacial surgery in the next years. Discussion PRF applications in periodontology The topical use of platelet concentrates is recent, an… Show more

“…In essence, the functional form of PRP is a growth-factor-releasing platelet-fibrin clot. Current injection therapy with PRP thus requires post-injection clotting, while PRF can only be used for topical, 44 or intraoperative administration. 45 , 46 , 47 The platelet activation and clot formation should not be too rapid for PRP as it can hinder the injection process.…”

“…They are presently used to assess the importance of sinus lift and implantation with L-PRF (Choukroun's technique) as a sole sub-sinus filling material. [ 3 ] PRF-based membranes are used for masking the alveolar ridge augmentation side in several in vivo studies. L-PRF is a new platelet concentrate used with a great success in a number of surgical procedures to optimize the wound healing.…”

“…PRF is a 2 nd generation natural fibrin-based biomaterial made from an anticoagulant-free blood harvest without any artificial biochemical modification, thereby attaining fibrin enriched by platelets and growth factors. [ 3 ] Choukroun's PRF is a matrix, in which cytokines and cells are entrapped which are released after a short period, and can serve as a resorbable membrane. [ 4 ] Whitman described the PRP for the first time in 1997 as a fibrin gel manufactured by Mantras.…”

“…[ 11 ] PRF is a second-generation natural fibrin-based biomaterial made from fresh blood from the patient by centrifuging without biochemical modifications, thereby attaining fibrin enriched by leukocytes, platelets, and growth factors. [ 12 ] Choukroun's PRF contains cytokines and cells are entrapped in a matrix, which is released after a short period and can serve as a resorbable membrane. The rationale behind the use of PRF membrane is that the platelet α granules are a reservoir of many growth factors that are known to play a definitive role in tissue repair.…”
