Is meaningful work the silver bullet? Perspectives of the social workers

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of meaningful work against dimensions of job burnout, with psychological capital (PsyCap) as the mediator. Design/methodology/approach Data from 223 social workers were analyzed using the partial least squares–structural equation modeling. Findings As expected, meaningful work displayed a positive, direct and significant relationship with PsyCap. Contrary to expectations, meaningful work did not establish a negative direct relationship with … Show more

“…Although the positive role of work meaning and its inverse association with burnout symptoms have been documented in different professions, such as physicians and nurses [ 14 ], pediatric residents [ 13 ], oncologists [ 45 ], schoolteachers [ 46 ], and social workers [ 47 ], there are still aspects of this relationship that need further investigation. How work meaning is maintained or constructed under various organizational contexts is an important issue that can add substantially to the understanding of this concept and its outcomes and interactions with other factors.…”

“…Four items were deleted due to low factor loading, resulting in an increase of its composite reliabilities and AVE above the recommended threshold. Studies such as Tan et al (2019) and Fam et al (2019) has also seen a similar number of items being deleted for not meeting the required threshold. The composite reliabilities of the constructs ranged from 0.775 to 0.918, which are higher than the cut-off value of 0.70 (Hair et al , 2017).…”

“…Additionally, this study performs a predictive model assessment, which makes PLS–SEM the preferred technique (Shmueli et al , 2019). Finally, PLS–SEM places lesser restrictions on data distribution and sample sizes, as well as its ability to handle complex models involving numerous endogenous and exogenous constructs (Tan et al , 2019a)…”

“…A unique feature of PLS–SEM lies in its predictive ability, which most of the existing studies such as Tan et al (2019b) and Tan et al (2019a) deployed the Stone-Geisser's test ( Q 2 ). Align with this, Table 4 shows that the Q 2 value is larger than zero, indicating that the model has predictive power.…”
