Is Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Associated with Renal Involvement? A Review of Century Infection

Abstract: Context: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is one of the most threatening pandemics in history involving multiple organs, including the kidney. This study aimed to review the association of COVID-19 with renal involvement. Evidence Acquisition: International databases, including the Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, were searched for articles by April 1, 2020. Keywords were COVID-19, coronavirus disease, SARS-CoV-2, kidney, renal function, acute kidney injury, and acute renal failure, … Show more

“…Given the high incidence and prevalence of the disease, growing human-animal interface, genetic diversity and recombination events across the genomes ( 3 ), the outbreak of COVID-19 is likely undertaken by super shaping phenomenon as previously suggested as the main cause for spreading SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV ( 4 ). COVID-19 is considered as a multi-organ failure disease in which can involve kidney, respiratory system and other organs ( 5 , 6 , 7 ).…”

“…Renal involvement is prominent in this regard and it is recommended to check renal factors such as creatinine at admission [14], [15]. There is more need to conduct further studies in different conditions, for example, pregnant women, because the data of these conditions are sparse.…”

“…The subjects of this study were 16 children with their age ranging from 27 days to 17 years, seven patients aged less than two years old, and six under one years old. According to some studies, infants were rated more susceptible to COVID-19 infection (7,13). Therefore, they showed severe symptoms, especially with comorbidities, accompanied by decreased renal function, indicated by increased serum creatinine levels.…”

“…The second protein for the invasion of SARS-CoV2 into cells was the surface serine protease TMPRSS2, found in cancerous prostate’s epithelium. However, they were also found in lesser amounts in the respiratory tract, although androgenic ligands and androgen receptors regulated the TMPRSS2 (1,7). The susceptibility and response to viral infection differed, in women, the circulating HIV viral RNA was 40% lower than that of men (16).…”
