Recently, a new respiratory infectious disease called COVID-19 has emerged and created a global emergency. It was initially linked to the animal-to-human transmission. However, it is now thought that COVID-19 is spreading through human-to-human transmission mainly via droplets. As there is no definite antiviral therapy for the treatment of cases with COVID-19 the best option for slowing down the pandemic and reducing mortality rates is protection against the virus of interest. To achieve this goal obtaining information about how first cases infected with COVID-19 is crucial. Hence, this study aims to review the studies published in peer-reviewed journals to report the first confirmed cases with COVID-19. Herein, we review the origin, symptoms, diagnostic tests, and progress of the disease and possible actions of authorities which would be effective in similar pandemics in the future. This study reviewed 13 cases (5 females and 8 males; 25-61 years old) from 10 countries. All cases have recovered from COVID-19. The results of this review suggested that timely reports of the confirmed cases, notifying World Health Organization and providing information to the general population about the methods of spreading the virus would have decreased the number of infected cases and mortality rates. In addition, the travel history of the first confirmed cases in various countries suggested that prompt actions in restricting travels and closing borders could be an efficient strategy in preventing the transmission of the disease outside of the affected sites. Efforts should be taken by health authorities for preparing the world for future epidemic/pandemic in terms of developing advanced screening strategies in the borders and diagnostic strategies for early identification of infected cases.

BACKGROUND: Novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome-CoV2 as a century concern affecting public health. AIM: This study aimed to find the clinical and demographic characteristics of the patients died following COVID-19 development at Modarres Hospital, Tehran, Iran. METHODS: In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, 62 patients died following COVID-19 were studied in terms of age, gender, body mass index, comorbidity, symptoms, liver profile, lipid profile, hemoglobin, platelet, white blood cell, lymphocytes, neutrophils, C-reaction protein, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), creatine phosphokinase, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), potassium, magnesium, and sodium. RESULTS: The results showed that 71% of patients were male and 69.4% had positive PCR test indicating low sensitivity of the test; 90.3% of patients were above 60 years old; 56.5 of patients had lymphocytopenia; the mean age was 67.62 ± 15.07 years; with symptoms lasting 6.24 days. The mean serum creatinine and BUN were 3.18 g/dl and 125.9 mg/dl, respectively, indicating renal involvement. All patients had pulmonary involvement accompanied by other organ involvements. Regarding symptoms, 72% of patients showed fever. Some affected patients had diarrhea, lethargy, and fatigue. A comparison of comorbidities by gender showed no significant differences. CONCLUSION: According to our results, the majority of patients were overweight. In people who are more than 60 years, multi-organ failure was notable. Fever, cough, and shortness of breath were dominant symptoms like other studies, but neurological complications following COVID-19 as meningoencephalitis is possible that can be used as a differential diagnosis. We did not found differences between male and female regarding comorbidity, symptoms, and mortality rate.

Background. Kidney manifestations are life-threatening conditions, such as end-stage renal disease (ESRD), especially when attributed to viral infections. The severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), is an emerging health problem worldwide, potentially affecting all organs, including the kidney. Most reports on kidney manifestations were conducted mostly on the adult and elderly population, and limited on children. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the correlation between kidney manifestations with the renal function of pediatric patients suffering from COVID-19. Methods. An observational analytic study was conducted in Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung, Indonesia, from March to August 2020. The demographic data, clinical signs, laboratory results, and notable kidney function were analysed, while the disease was classified as severe and nonsevere based on its clinical appearance. The Mann-Whitney test for nonparametric was used to analyze the collected data. Results. In this study, 16 COVID-19 children were selected as the research subjects, the median eGFR value in the severe group was lower (49.59 ml / minute / 1.73m2) compared to the nonsevere (113 ml / minute / 1.73m2), however, not statistically significant (p = 0.521). Significant high CRP and low thrombocyte levels were found in severe SARS-CoV-2 infection (p<0.05). Conclusion. A severe SARS-CoV-2 infection tends to affect the kidney, which is manifested as decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
