Ionic Liquid Based Aqueous Biphasic Systems with Controlled pH: The Ionic Liquid Cation Effect

Abstract: This work addresses the evaluation of the ability of ionic liquid cations on the formation of aqueous biphasic systems (ABS's), with K 2 HPO 4 or a mixture of inorganic salts, K 2 HPO 4 /KH 2 PO 4 , aiming at controlling the pH values of the coexisting aqueous phases. Using chloride-based ionic liquids, the effects of the cation core, the length of the alkyl side chain, and the positional isomerism on ABS formation ability were investigated. All binodal curves were determined by the cloud-point titration metho… Show more

“…This higher acidity provided by aromatic and 5-member ring cations correlates well with their ability to be solvated by water by enhanced hydrogen-bonding, either in binary 58 or ternary aqueous systems. 59 On the other hand, for the non- , as experimentally observed. In this context, the charge distribution/contribution of the cation also plays a major role in the acidity of a given IL.…”

“…No entanto, a maior parte dos polímeros utilizados na formação dos SAB possuem alta viscosidade e, normalmente, formam soluções aquosas opacas, que poderiam interferir na análise quantitativa e qualitativa dos compostos extraídos (Perumalsamy, 2007;Ventura et al, 2011).…”
