Ionic liquid assisted preparation of nanostructured TiO2 particles

Abstract: Anatase-containing nanostructured TiO(2) particles with high surface area have been synthesized using a water immiscible room temperature ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) as an effective additional solvent by the sol-gel method at low temperature.

“…[240,241] Although the synthesis of metal oxides in ionic liquids or mixed solutions containing ionic liquids has just begun, the number of publications in this direction is much more than that on the synthesis of silicas using ionic liquids because of the diversity of metal oxides. Typical examples include the synthesis of TiO 2 , [47,48,[242][243][244][245][246][247][248][249][250][251][252][253][254][255] ZnO, [43,[256][257][258][259][260][261][262][263][264][265][266] CuO, [267][268][269][270][271] Cu 2 O, [272] Fe 2 O 3 , [273,274] NiO, [275] ZrO 2 , [276] Co 3 O 4 , [277,278] CeO 2 , [279,280] SnO 2 , [281,282] PbO, …”

“…Ionic liquid (IL), a kind of fascinating molten salt with nearly zero vapor pressure and high thermal stability [5][6][7], has demonstrated high affinity toward various kinds of solid, such as carbon nanotubes [8][9][10][11][12][13][14], silica [15][16][17] and clays [18]. Various interactions, including cation-π interaction [8][9][10][11]19], van der Waal forces [13], delocalized electron interaction [14] and hydrogen bonding [16,18] have been well acknowledged and therefore subjected to a plenty of applications [14,[16][17][18][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]. Thanks to these interactions, ILs with specific structure can be employed as possible interfacial modifiers for various filled polymer composites.…”

“…The result could support the fact that ionic liquid plays a role to form regular structure of TiO 2 particle. 13,19,20 About 1 μm diameter of sphere with less polydispersity was obtained using OPF6/HPF6 as shown in Figure 2(b). On the other hand, sample consisted of submicrospheres and submicrosphere aggregates with diameter of less than 500 nm was formed using OBF4/HBF4 (see Figure 2(c)).…”
