Preparation of Inorganic Materials Using Ionic Liquids

Conventional synthesis of inorganic materials relies heavily on water and organic solvents. Alternatively, the synthesis of inorganic materials using, or in the presence of, ionic liquids represents a burgeoning direction in materials chemistry. Use of ionic liquids in solvent extraction and organic catalysis has been extensively studied, but their use in inorganic synthesis has just begun. Ionic liquids are a family of non-conventional molten salts that can act as templates and precursors to inorganic materials, as well as solvents. They offer many advantages, such as negligible vapor pressures, wide liquidus ranges, good thermal stability, tunable solubility for both organic and inorganic molecules, and much synthetic flexibility. In this Review, the use of ionic liquids in the preparation of several categories of inorganic and hybrid materials (i.e., metal structures, non-metal elements, silicas, organosilicas, metal oxides, metal chalcogenides, metal salts, open-framework structures, ionic liquid-functionalized materials, and supported ionic liquids) is summarized. The status quo of the research field is assessed, and some future perspectives are furnished.

Abstract.A novel functional ionic liquid (IL), 1-methylimidazolium methacrylate (MimMa), was synthesized for modifying styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)/silica composites. MimMa was found to be readily polymerized via the initiated radical mechanism and could be analogously grafted onto rubber chains during vulcanization. Substantial hydrogen bonding between polymerized MimMa (poly(MimMa)) and silica can facilitate the silica dispersion and improve the SBR/silica interfacial bonding. Filler networking, curing behavior, silica dispersion and mechanical performance of the modified SBR/silica composites were studied. With a low concentration of MimMa, remarkable improvements in the interfacial interactions and mechanical properties were achieved which was attributed to the improved silica dispersion and strengthened interfacial bonding induced by MimMa. A modified interphase structure was accordingly proposed and related to the mechanical performance of the modified SBR/silica composites.

Titania spheres were synthesized using binary ionic liquids to examine the electrocatalytic activity in acid solution. The morphology of TiO 2 particles was significantly different with the composition of ionic liquids. Among the binary ionic liquids, four set of mixtures led to the formation of TiO 2 sphere with various sizes. The morphology and structure of TiO 2 particles were characterized by XRD, N 2 physisoption and SEM analysis. All samples possessed an anatase phase after calcinations at 500 o C. The structural properties of the samples were varied significantly with the morphology. In cyclic voltammograms, the morphology of TiO 2 spheres affected the electrocatalytic activity in water electrolysis.
