Synthesis of novel functional liquid and its application as a modifier in SBR/silica composites

Abstract: Abstract.A novel functional ionic liquid (IL), 1-methylimidazolium methacrylate (MimMa), was synthesized for modifying styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)/silica composites. MimMa was found to be readily polymerized via the initiated radical mechanism and could be analogously grafted onto rubber chains during vulcanization. Substantial hydrogen bonding between polymerized MimMa (poly(MimMa)) and silica can facilitate the silica dispersion and improve the SBR/silica interfacial bonding. Filler networking, curing beh… Show more

“…For example, 1-methylimidazolium methacrylate (MimMa) was used to modify the silica surface to increase the interfacial interactions between filler and SBR. Hydrogen bonding between silica particles and the ionic unit of MimMa were confirmed [11]. Moreover, the graft copolymerization of MimMa onto elastomer chains during the vulcanization process was responsible for the reactivity of ionic liquid towards SBR.…”

“…Generally, a silane coupling agent is used to increase the interaction between the nonpolar elastomer and the highly polar silica used as filler. In this case, ILs can adsorb on the filler surface, as postulated in the literature [11] and increase the interphase interactions between the elastomer and filler. It is known that during vulcanization, accelerators adsorb on the filler's surface, decreasing the efficiency of vulcanization.…”

“…Elastomer composites with this type of morphology should reveal the ability to relax stress upon external deformation of the sample. The ability of imidazolium salts containing vinyl groups covalently introduced on IL cation or anion moieties to facilitate polymerization has been confirmed [19,20]. Moreover, its application was shown to improve silica dispersions in elastomers and the mechanical performance of the vulcanizates.…”

“…1-Methylimidazolidine methacrylate salt (MimMa) was found to polymerise via a radical-initiated mechanism and was easily grafted onto SBR chains during vulcanisation [18]. Substantial hydrogen bonding between polymerised MimMa and silica facilitated the dispersion of silica in the elastomer and improved the interfacial interactions between SBR and silica particles.…”
