Investigations of Physico-Chemical Parameters and its Pollution Implications of Elala River, Mekelle, Tigray, Ethiopia

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to assess the water quality parameters of Elala River found in Mekelle, Tigray, Ethiopia. Four sampling sites were chosen spatially along the water course to reflect a consideration of all possible activities that are capable of affecting the quality of the river water. The water samples were collected monthly for three consecutive months (March to May, 2014) at the four sampling sites. In order to understand the characteristics of Elala River, principal component analysis (PCA) … Show more

“…Assessment of the physicochemical properties of the water and sediment is also very important because these quality parameters are capable of affecting the biological characteristics of the environmental matrices and are the basis for judging the suitability of such water body for its designated uses [10–12]. Although some of these parameters may have limited health significance, international standards necessitate their determination [13].…”

“…In regards to S2, Group 1 was composed of: Hardness, EC, TDS; Group 2: As and pH; Group 3: Turbidity and ORP; and Group 4: Temperature. Gebreyohannes et al [68] determined in their area of study that TDS, Hardness and EC were positively associated and these were negatively associated with pH and Turbidity. The comparison plots of PC1 vs. PC2 in each sample indicate the displacement through components 1 and 2.…”
