As the second in a series of status reports, this document describes the most recent research findings (October 1977 to March 1981) as they apply to the ecological effects of coal conversion by the solvent refined coal (SRC) process. An earlier report, which summarized research conducted between May 1976 and September 1977, describes data on organic and inorganic constituents and acute toxicity. (a) Solvent refined coal materials used in these studies were collected at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) pilot plant in Fort Lewis, Washington, operated by the Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company (P & M Co.). It should be noted that these materials may not necessarily represent future commercial SRC products.
