This article introduces superconducting (SC) machines and their main advantages over conventional machines. Major topology options and their influence on machine performance are analyzed. The hybrid superconducting synchronous machines are introduced in terms of their main components, design consideration, and comparison with conventional machines. Then, distinct assembly units and the characteristics of superconducting machines are illustrated. Special topics inSCelectrical machines, including the current leads for low‐temperatureSCmagnets, short circuit faults,SCcoil insulation, and quench protection are considered. Potential applications and development trends of superconducting machines are also discussed.
