Investigation of Eighteen Indonesian Mutant Rice Straw Varieties as Ruminant Roughage

Abstract: The comparison was made between eighteen mutant and four non-mutant rice straw variety in Indonesia in terms of chemical composition, nutrient value and in vitro digestibility. The second objective was to determine the correlation between in vitro digestibility parameters and fibrous component in twenty-two Indonesian rice straw varieties. Rice straw samples were collected in triplicate from three replicate plots. The effect of variety on rice straw quality, nutrient values and in vitro digestibility was analy… Show more

“…A high negative relationship between fiber and digestibility may be found in forage, but not in soybeans. Previous studies reported that high fiber fraction will reduce the digestibility of the feed (Wahyono et al, 2019(Wahyono et al, , 2021. In present study, EE was negatively correlated with IVDMD.…”

“…NDF content represents most of the cell wall/fiber of soybeans seeds (Van Eys, 2015), while ADF content consists of primary lignocellulose structure and is resistant to microbial fermentation in the rumen . NDF levels have a negative correlation with feed intake, while ADF has a negative correlation with digestibility values of feedstuffs (Wahyono et al, 2021). The mean NDF content (19.97 %) of the soybean genotypes was higher than that reported in other literature (Dei, 2011;Ishler and Varga, 2015;Van Eys, 2015).…”

“…Rumen liquor (400 mL) and buffer solutions (1200 mL) were mixed into each digestion jar and incubated at 39 o C for 48 h. After incubation, bags were rinsed in tap water and dried at 105 o C for 12 h. Samples were analyzed for NDF using fibre analyzer ANKOM A200 (Ankom Technology Corp, Fairport, NY, USA). In vitro true digestibility (IVTD) was calculated using the equation previously reported by Wahyono et al (2021), as follows:…”

“…As reported in rice straw and palm oil leaves, agricultural and plantation by-products have low nutrient compounds and high fibre contents. Wahyono et al [16] reported that rice straw contains high lignin and silica. Fiber compounds in rice straw have negatively associated with digestibility and nutrient value [25].…”

“…The calculation of RFV, DMD, and DMI of forages were obtained from NDF and ADF values [16]. All predictions were calculated as follows [17]: DMI (% live weight) = 120 % 𝑁𝐷𝐹 ⁄ DMD (%) = 88.9 − (% 𝐴𝐷𝐹 × 0.779) RFV = 𝐷𝑀𝐷 × 𝐷𝑀𝐼 1.29 ⁄…”
