Investigation of critical parameters of mixed insulating fluids

Abstract: Traditionally, mineral oil is used as insulating fluids in transformers. The environmental impact of these mineral oils is often characterized in past centuries. In order to overcome the above facts, Vegetable oil is used as alternative source for mineral oil. Vegetable oil has higher biodegradability and it is treated as more environmental friendly fluids. In this work, the refined natural esters like Sunflower oil, Rice bran oil and Corn oil are chosen and mixed in various proportions. The critical parameter… Show more

“…The major technical areas (with respect to the use of vegetable oils as insulation liquid in transformers), which need further attention is listed as following [5,[42][43][44][45][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85]: (i) More studies and research is needed to the reduce the production cost, develop low cost feed stocks and identify potential markets in order to balance cost and availability. (ii) Continued transformer performance and durability in a variety of transformer types and sizes need to be developed to increase manufacture and consumer confidence.…”

“…The vegetable oils are naturally obtained from seeds as well as form flowers. Many researchers and industries are performing investigations on vegetable oils for providing them as insulating oils in transformers and pollution free environment [6]. Vegetable oils have the properties like High biodegradable (495%), low toxicity, high flash points (4300 1C), fire points (4300 1C), provide lower flammability and it is considered more environmental friendly fluids [7][8][9].…”

“…They are extracted naturally from seeds, flowers or less likely from other segments of fruits. Numerous investigators and industries are conducting research to examine their effectiveness as insulating fluids in HV equipment [13]. VGs are highly biodegradable (>95%), lesser toxic, lesser flammable and have an extraordinary flashpoint (>300 • C) and fire points (>300 • C).…”

“…Its cost has increased significantly over the last 20 years. Like mineral oil, other oils such as silicone oils or synthetic esters have good characteristics, but are non-renewable, poorly biodegradable and their high cost restricted their use to particular applications [3] [4]; they are therefore not considered as an alternative to mineral oils. All these new constraints have motivated the development for several years of better substitute oils to replace the mineral oils traditionally used, which are not able to provide adequate safety conditions.…”
