Investigating the relationships between peristaltic contraction and fluid transport in the human colon using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

Abstract: The gastrointestinal tract comprises of several distinct organs in sequence, extending over 7 meters in the human abdomen. Controlled propulsion and mixing of content along the digestive tract is essential for a normal life. This is achieved by a rich assortment of motor patterns that ensure that movements and propulsion are appropriate for the breakdown of food, absorption of nutrients and excretion of waste. These movements (motility) are due to coordinated contractions and relaxations of circular and longit… Show more

“…Rather than use LJ, this effort approaches this problem by applying a force on the particles in contact proportional to what is needed to stop the particle from crossing the boundary and stop it from further travel. A variation of this approach was previously taken with SPH and discrete multi-hybrid physics (DMP) models to study the effects of blood and tissues in the human body [33][34][35][36][37][38][39]. By using the combination of these approaches, a stable Lagrangian simulation of solid mechanics and fluid-solid interactions can be achieved.…”

“…Efforts to use artificial viscosity approaches have only had limited success [23,26]. If these limitations could be overcome, SPH and SPAM could be used together for fluid-solid interaction (FSI) simulations [33][34][35][36][37][38][39], a capability that many commercial FEA and CFD software packages lack.…”

“…В последнее десятилетие активно развиваются математиче-ские модели для описания течения пищи в пи-щеводе [7,25], желудке [14,15,18] и кишечни-ке [17,16,19]. Следует отметить, что при раз-работке моделей исследователи, как правило, рассматривают моторную функцию тракта, а биохимическим реакциям, секрециям пище-варительных желез и всасыванию компонент пищи уделяется меньше внимания.…”

“…This one-way coupling leads to non-physical forces applied to the fluid content with no ability of the rigid wall to respond to local changes in fluid pressure. In this study we have used a biomechanical computational model, previously developed for coupled wall flexure and flow dynamics [10] based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method [11], to interpret how manometric sensor readings relate to intraluminal pressures in a dynamic model.…”
