This study aims at investigating the types of cohesive devices (CDs) and the errors in using cohesive devices (CDs) in opinion essays made by the Indonesian students of EFL.The subjects were twenty-six (26) undergraduate program students of EFL enrolled in an Argumentative writing class. To get the data, they were asked to write an opinion essay which consists of five paragraphs (including introductory and concluding paragraph). After the data were collected, each of the students’ paper was read to identify the use of cohesive devices based on the theory of cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). Then, the number, the frequency and the percentage of cohesive devices were counted. The results of the study revealed that reference had the highest percentage (52.04%), followed by lexical cohesion (32.95%) and conjunction (15.02%). Meanwhile, substitution and ellipsis were absent. Although there were three types of cohesive to be used, the errors still happened in small number such as in conjunction; but, so, or and and.

Students and test takers of iBT faced difficult problem in solving how to write a full English Essay of different genres in 30 minutes with minimum 250 words. The designed technique facilitates students and test-takers how to write such essay in 30 minutes, but the result meets the standard ideal iBT TOEFL test model. The technique is called Forward-Back Forward Revising and Publishing (FBFRP) Technique. The designed is under the learning principles of CTL: critical creative and self-regulative thought. This study is 1) to provide a technique that can help students and test takers to develop their computerized-based English Essay effectively in 30 minutes, 2) to describe how the procedure of FBFRP technique work in writing computerized -based English Essay, 3) to shows readers how FBFRP technique was developed and validated. This is a research and development adopted by Borg and Gale (2003), Formative Evaluation taken by Tesmer (2013) self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one, small group, and field test. The outcomes are 1) a technique that can help students and test takers called "FBFRP Technique, 2) a description or underlying principles of how FBFRP technique work in writing computerized-based English Essay, 3) the process of how FBFRP technique was validated. The product is applicable across disciplines in ELT or ESL context as an instructional tool, particularly for Academic writing course, and real test of internet-based TOEFL test takers.

Considering the crucial roles of interpersonal meaning in argumentative speech, the study evaluated the use of interpersonal meaning using Halliday’s theory (2014) in debate speeches. It aimed to find out the use of mood and modality in the speech of debaters and how mood and modality realize assertiveness. This research used a qualitative research design with the data from spoken language, especially the final round of the National School Debating Championship 2020. The result of the study on 6 high school debaters showed that there are 1061 mood systems found; they are classified as declarative, interrogative, and imperative mood systems. The most occurred mood in the speech was the declarative mood, which is 999 clauses and categorized as a statement that contains information for the debater to present their idea. The presented ideas were used in an attempt to justify the team’s stances. The modality system found that the most common type of modality in speech was the inclination modality, which is 40 clauses. It indicates that the debater wants to show their determination on how the debater deals with the motion. By analyzing the speech using interpersonal meaning, the highest number of declarative mood and inclination modalities indicates the assertiveness in every debater’s speech.
