Understanding the Indonesian EFL Zen students’ synchronous engagement in research course

Synchronous learning engagement has been studied during the pandemic Covid-19. However, few studies investigated Zen participants' engagement in particular courses. The study aims to disclose the EFL Zen students' devotion to synchronous instructional research courses during the disruption phase. The study focuses on the students'; miscellaneous preferences, commitments, technological learning support, topic searching reports (TSR), and research proposals submitted (RPS). The design is a survey study with descriptive qualitative and quantitative data. 24 students were purposively chosen as total samplings. Three instruments were employed to take data; Google forms (GF), electronic observation, and reflection. The 24 participants answered questions four times in a semester through GF. The data were analyzed in descriptive and parametric statistics. The result shows that the participants changed their time preferences due to changing habits and practical reasons. Google Meet and Zoom have caused different impacts and raised various insights. The majority engaged technologically at the basic level. This study also reveals the poor quality of the participants in presenting some essential parts of a thesis proposal. They faced various difficulties in presenting sections of their RPS. The statistics test shows a significant positive correlation between TPR and RPS (r =0.862, p<0.01). It is concluded that the EFL Zen students perform their optimum engagement and learning achievement despite being supported by sophisticated technology. This research implies that teachers need various scenarios to employ online platforms and charge more creative activities to harvest optimum learning outcomes.

This research investigates the rural teachers' voices related to implementing online learning during covid-19. Due to understanding the schools' readiness in remote areas, it is essential to carry out English learning activities in emergencies. The subject of this research was 6 English teachers from two schools. Three were from SMAN 1 Ruteng-Anam, and three other teachers from SMAN 1 Lelak Manggarai regency, Nusa Tenggara-Timur. This research is categorized as qualitative research. The data were explained descriptively. In collecting the data, a questionnaire and interview were used. The questionnaire consisted of 3 main questionsinvolved. They covered the teachers' enthusiasm for Teaching English Using Technology, the Implementation of Online Learning During the COVID-19 Epidemic, and the obstacles that English teachers faced during the pandemic. The teachers' additional information was gathered in the interview section. The data were analyzed and explained descriptively based on the result of the questionnaires and interviews. The result of the research showed that teachers at SMAN 1 Ruteng Anam and SMAN 1 Lelak during the pandemic still adapted to the situation. The limitations of technological facilities during the pandemic are not able to prevent teachers from teaching English activities. However, English teachers experienced many issues during the pandemic. The issues are related to teaching planning, delivery, and evaluation of the material. Those problems implicated the quality and intensity of learning activity, in which many English teachers assessed the students' improvement subjectively.

Despite many studies focusing on writing materials, few developed e-book writing materials for university students. This study aims to 1) analyze the students' and lecturers' needs related to the development of the Introduction to Essay Writing Course's textbook based on HOTS-Tech (Higher Order Thinking Skill-Technology) integrated with CM-PBL (Case Method-Project Based Learning) and 2) to develop an Introduction to Essay Writing Course's textbook based on HOTS-Tech integrated with CM-PBL. This study employs R &D with the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate). Participants in the current study are 35 university students and four lecturers. We employed instruments such as questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Data collection traces the ADDIE model, while the data analysis employs non-parametric statistics with a descriptive quantitative model. The result shows that the book adheres contents of the book, material presentation, presentation order, the balance of the chapter, language use, and layout. The activities should cover higher-order thinking skills (HOTs) under main categories; analyzing, evaluating, and creating. The current study implies that EFL university teachers embed technology and HOTs in the Essay Writing e-book to promote the techno-skill of the current generation.
