This research was aimed to know about moral values in the textbook. Textbooks were analyzed by using critical discourse analysis (CDA) data was obtained through analyzing the whole texts. This study attempts to examined the moral values which appeared in the English textbook "When English Rings a Bell" for seventh of Junior high school or equivalent based on the curriculum and presidential decree to teach character education to students, which included 18 moral values and to describe the moral values represented in the practice of conversational texts. It was designed as content analysis in the form of descriptive qualitative research. The result of this study were (1) The most apparently of moral values found in the English textbook were social awareness, curiosity, and responsibility, and (2) Moral values in English textbook was found in the conversation text through implicitly in the form of a moral message conveyed by the writer. it can be concluded that the authors of this textbook focus more on social values such as social awareness, curiosity, responsibility in the form of teaching moral values as character education for students at an early age. Then, the textbook was contained the moral values based on the presidential decree about character education. The textbook was quite good, but it can be improved. This study aims at investigating the types of cohesive devices (CDs) and the errors in using cohesive devices (CDs) in opinion essays made by the Indonesian students of EFL.The subjects were twenty-six (26) undergraduate program students of EFL enrolled in an Argumentative writing class. To get the data, they were asked to write an opinion essay which consists of five paragraphs (including introductory and concluding paragraph). After the data were collected, each of the students’ paper was read to identify the use of cohesive devices based on the theory of cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). Then, the number, the frequency and the percentage of cohesive devices were counted. The results of the study revealed that reference had the highest percentage (52.04%), followed by lexical cohesion (32.95%) and conjunction (15.02%). Meanwhile, substitution and ellipsis were absent. Although there were three types of cohesive to be used, the errors still happened in small number such as in conjunction; but, so, or and and.
Abstract:The study is intended to describe the methods of defining terms found in the theses of the English Foreign Language (EFL) students of IAIN Palangka Raya. The method to be used is a mixed method, qualitative and quantitative. Quantitative approach was used to identify, describe the frequencies, and classify the methods of defining terms. In interpreting and explaining the types of method to be used, the writer used qualitative approach. In qualitative approach, data were described in the form of words and explanation. The findings show that there were two methods of defining terms, dictionary approach and athoritative reference.
Socio-affective strategies relates to socially The Sample was random sampling technique. This research was conducted in order to determine the learning outcomes obtained quantitatively by conducting a survey of 45 students at SMP Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya. The information was gathered through the use of a questionnaire. The survey found that the majority of students in the speaking class used their own tactics. There were six students studying at the time. This showed that each learning strategy affected the progress of students in the English speaking class. It meant that the students' strategies affected their progress in obtaining learning outcomes in their learning progress while speaking class. In conclusion the most students in speaking class have their own learning strategies. Not only 6 strategies that can affect student learning abilities, but also the others can affect too, such as psychological factors, the role of teachers, assignments, environmental and social factors. The study is intended to identify, classify, evaluate, describe, and explain the quality and the patterns of research problems in the S-2 theses of the English Education Program at Islamic University of Malang. Qualitative approach and evaluation designs were used. The data of the study were 135 of S-2 theses of the English Education Program at Islamic University of Malang from 2003-2008. The study reveals that the majority of the research problems, as written in the theses, indicate clarity, researchability, variables being involved, areas, designs, non-factual data or information, and significance.
