This study aims to identify the effectiveness of the P5BL model in developing high school students’ deep understanding and academic achievement motivation in biology. To achieve the study objectives, a quasi-experimental design was adopted. The research sample consisted of 112 male students divided into two groups: a control group (54 students) and an experimental group (58 students). The research tools are a deep understanding achievement test, consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions, and the academic achievement motivation scale, consisting of 32 items. The results revealed that the P5BL model is effective in developing second-grade high school students’ deep understanding (explanation, interpretation, application and perspective) and academic achievement motivation (academic ambition, goal orientation, achievement orientation and cognitive motivation). A correlation was also found between developing second-grade high school students’ deep understanding and academic achievement motivation. The most important recommendations include the need to prepare guidance for science teachers to help them teach using the P5BL model, as well as inform science teachers of the importance of using the P5BL model to develop deep understanding and academic achievement motivation. Many suggestions are also presented, including conducting further research on teaching biology, such as investigating the impact of the P5BL model on developing students' creative thinking and inquiry skills and investigating the effectiveness of the P5BL model in developing pre-service biology teachers’ tendency toward self-reflection and reflective thinking skills.

Student’s academic performance or achievement has from time to time been a subject of discourse to academicians, scholars, researchers and educational institutions all over the globe. To this regard, schools are expected to play major and active roles in ensuring that students actually have good performance at end of their programmes. The academic performance is normally used to classify or predict how students would be ultimately capable to withstand and face future challenges after graduation. Students’ academic performance/achievement in any course of study plays a vital role in contributing and producing outstanding students who will be future viable leaders. The use of algorithms to classify and predict students’ academic performance/achievement is not new in machine learning using different techniques like neural network, logistic regression, decision tree and many more. This study classifies and predicts with the use of graphical technique called Decision Tree. The dataset was built from student’ attendance, practical assessment, assignment, ability to complete a free related course on internet, test score, and examination grade; the dataset was divided into training test and testing set. The training test was used to build and validate the decision tree algorithm (CHAID) while testing set was used to evaluate CHAID on the overall accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. The results show that decision tree algorithm makes classification and prediction visible and clear with the use of graphics to display the results. Hence, the model built produces 96% accuracy.

In Burundi, the academic performance in English for post-basic school leavers is wanting. Many researchers attribute poor academic achievement to the quality of teaching but fail to investigate the role the classroom context plays in learners’ academic achievement. This paper is a report of part of a study undertaken in 2023 on evaluating the instructional influences of the post-basic school English curriculum for learners’ achievement in Burundi. The paper specifically reports on the impact of classroom context on learners’ achievement in Burundi's post-basic school English curriculum. The study used a convergent mixed methods design and was guided by Communicative Language Teaching and Social Learning theories. For data collection, learners’ questionnaires, teachers’ interviews, and classroom observations were used. The research participants were sixteen teachers of English and three hundred and thirty post-basic school learners in the second and third years of the languages section in the Bujumbura Municipality. The research participants were selected through stratified and simple random sampling techniques. Data was analysed using descriptive and thematic analyses. The study revealed that teachers provided a welcoming learning atmosphere in their respective classrooms and promoted peer assistance. It was also established that teachers motivated learners to speak English differently, enhancing the learning process. It was revealed that teachers inspired learners in matters of using the English language (mean = 4.29, SD =.883). Moreover, the results showed that the classroom surroundings were generally perceived as noisy (mean = 2.95, SD = 1.327), and most of the classes were overcrowded (mean = 2.81, SD = 1.360). The study established that the classroom learning context greatly influenced learners' academic achievement (mean = 3.405, SD =.5030). The study recommended that the government should improve the classroom context for learners’ optimal academic performance in English.
