Ecological footprint (EF) determines the area of ecologically productive territory necessary to produce the resources utilised and to assimilate the waste produced by a given population over a year. Knowing your own EF is the first step in planning and implementing policies to reduce it. Considering that transport is a significant component of the impact of human activity on the environment, this study calculates the EF of the CO2 emissions associated with person mobility (EFM) at the University of A Coruña (UDC). The results presented are based on statistical inference from surveys conducted in 2008, 2016, and 2020. The period 2008–2016 coincides with the effects of the economic crisis, and 2020 with those of the COVID-19 pandemic. The EFM of UDC in 2016 was 2177 global hectares (gha), 148 times its biocapacity. Ninety-two percent of it was generated by car trips. Policies to reduce the environmental impact of mobility should focus on reducing car use. This study analyzes various factors of variability. The EFM per capita of the commutes from the place of residence to the UDC campuses grew between 2008 and 2020 by 17%. The results obtained are compared with those of other nearby universities and around the world.

O consumo consciente tornou-se imperativo em sociedades que repensam seu modelo de desenvolvimento. Por exemplo, para uma Instituição de Ensino Superior (IES), que demanda grandes quantidades de materiais, as compras sustentáveis representam uma oportunidade de múltiplos benefícios elencados nas dimensões sociais, ambientais e econômicas. As estratégias sustentáveis de compras, no entanto, podem aumentar a especulação quanto aos efeitos negativos, principalmente aqueles relacionados à parte econômica, fazendo-se necessários estudos que facilitem as tomadas de decisão. Por isso, o objetivo é avaliar a viabilidade estratégica e econômica de práticas sustentáveis no setor de compras de uma IES privada do Brasil. Os resultados mostram a importância de se considerar a sustentabilidade no planejamento estratégico, que deverá estar integrado em todas as áreas da instituição, incluindo o departamento de compras. Pretende-se mostrar, também, que, embora a viabilidade econômica das compras sustentáveis seja fundamental, necessita-se ponderar os impactos econômicos, sociais e ambientais para a instituição.

Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions need to be cut to limit climate change. Thus, universities, in the same way as citizens and companies, are starting to raise awareness about this issue and to take action to reduce their carbon footprint. Centrale Nantes, a French “Grande école”, initiated a low carbon transition with the calculation of the 2018 carbon footprint of the university. This report presents an individual carbon footprint estimator developed within the scope of the university, based on the new open-source French national simulator called “Nos Gestes Climat” proposed by ABC (Association Bilan Carbone (Association for the implementation of Carbon footprint assessment)) and ADEME (French Environment and Energy Management Agency). Development context and important features of the national version are described. Then, to meet university user’s expectations, feedback from a panel of testers has been collected in order to guide the declination development and promote good practices ensuring user engagement. The transparency of the data model, the accurate explanations, the variety of actions have been found to be key success factors for the development and the adoption of such a simulator. Results also suggested that users are keen to involve themselves in the university initiative to reach carbon neutrality.
