Investigating Effects of Screen Layout Elements on Interface and Screen Design Aesthetics

Abstract: A recent study suggested the use of the screen layout elements of balance, unity, and sequence as a part of a computational model of interface aesthetics. It is argued that these three elements are the most contributed terms in the model. In the current study, a controlled experiment was designed and conducted to systematically investigate effects of these three elements (balance, unity, and sequence) on the perceived interface aesthetics. Results showed that the three elements have significant effects on the … Show more

“…In recent HCI research, the interactionist approach has been utilised for a combination of the objectivist and subjectivist perspectives. For instance, classical and expressive aesthetics (Lavie and Tractinsky, 2004) and VisAWI (Moshagen and Thielsch, 2010), which can be characterised as widely accepted measures applied in the subjective approach (Seckler et al, 2015), have been examined in terms of correlations with design elements detected in objectivist studies (Michailidou et al, 2008;Altaboli and Lin, 2011;Silvennoinen and Jokinen, 2016b). Another approach to connecting design elements and experience outcomes is computational aesthetics (Miniukovich and De Angeli, 2015;Ivory et al, 2001;Reinecke et al, 2013), which can be considered to follow the bottom-up approach in how it addresses detecting visual UI design elements and compositional structures important in affective design.…”

“…One of the principles of the layout that Rustan mentions is sequence, to give priority to reading that automatically sorts the eye view [25]. According to Altaboli, the layout of visual objects on the screen can play a role in the perception of the user assessing an aesthetic [22]. Talking about navigation and reading priorities, basically the layout arrangement in each panel in the comic is aimed at driving the viewers' views in accordance with the wishes of the secretary.…”

“…Therefore, in the context of the UDM, the term layout refers to the general arrangement of objects over the entire expanse of the screen/slide. The layout of visual information can have a significant effect on viewer impressions (Altaboli & Lin, 2011) and comprehension (Wästlund, Norlander, & Archer, 2008). Additionally, good layout can shape attention, so the viewer processes the most important aspects of the information (Pralle, 2007).…”
